When I first sat down to map out my Hanoi itinerary, there was one place that didn’t just make the list—it practically jumped onto the page on its own: Ha Long Bay. I mean, how could it not? This place isn’t just a “popular spot”; it’s the kind of place you see in photos and immediately think, Yep, that’s it. I want to go there.
Even before I packed my bags, I was already daydreaming about those emerald-green waters and towering limestone cliffs. The excitement was honestly next level. By the time my flight landed in Hanoi, Ha Long Bay wasn’t just part of the plan; it was the moment I was waiting for.
And then… a tiny hiccup. The airport transfer I booked through my hostel didn’t show up, which was frustrating. But once I checked in, they made things a lot easier. The staff asked if I wanted to book a Ha Long Bay tour because they could arrange it for me. And honestly? I didn’t even think twice. It was already night, I was tired, and I didn’t feel like walking around looking for better deals. So I said yes right away.
✅ What Is Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay is one of Vietnam’s most iconic natural wonders. Located in the northeast of the country, this UNESCO World Heritage site is famous for its breathtaking scenery of thousands of limestone islands and islets rising from emerald waters, creating a surreal, almost otherworldly landscape that looks like something out of a painting—or a fantasy movie. It’s known for its stunning boat tours, mystical caves like Sung Sot Cave, kayaking adventures, floating fishing villages, and rich biodiversity, making it a top destination for both natural beauty and adventure.
The name “Ha Long” literally means “Descending Dragon”, inspired by a local legend about dragons sent to protect Vietnam from invaders. Whether or not you believe in the myth, there’s no denying the bay’s magical atmosphere. From quiet coves and floating fishing villages to hidden caves and grottoes, Ha Long Bay offers a mix of serenity and adventure that appeals to every kind of traveler.

✅ When To Visit Ha Long Bay
Timing your visit to Ha Long Bay can completely shape your experience. The best time to go is during the pleasant, dry seasons, when the weather is mild, skies are clear, and the scenery is at its most vibrant:
- Spring (March–April): Warm, comfortable weather perfect for sightseeing and boat tours.
- Autumn (October–November): Stunning scenery with crisp skies and amazing visibility—ideal for photos.
- Budget-friendly (May–September): Travel deals are available, but be prepared for occasional storms and heavy rains.
- Winter (December–February): Cooler, clearer skies with fewer crowds—perfect for a peaceful, contemplative visit.
In short: choose spring for pleasant warmth, autumn for jaw-dropping scenery, winter for tranquility, or summer for budget travel—but keep typhoon risks in mind from June to August.

✅ How To Get To Ha Long Bay
There are several ways, depending on your budget, comfort, and schedule. The distance from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay is about 160 km (100 miles), which usually takes 3.5–4 hours by road.
-
By Bus or Shuttle: Many companies run daily buses or shuttles from Hanoi’s Old Quarter directly to Ha Long City or the pier for boat tours. This is a popular and affordable option for travelers.
-
By Private Car or Taxi: If you prefer more flexibility or are traveling in a group, hiring a private car or taxi is a great choice. It’s faster and more comfortable.
-
By Train: The ride is longer and less flexible than buses or cars, but it can be a unique way to see the countryside. Though less common, trains run from Hanoi to Ha Long City.
-
By Tour Package: Many travelers opt for organized tours from Hanoi that include transportation, a boat cruise, and sometimes meals. This is the easiest option if you want everything arranged ahead of time.
Pro tip: If you’re booking a boat tour, check whether transportation from Hanoi is included. Some tours handle all the logistics, which makes your trip smooth from start to finish, and I highly recommend taking a tour.
✅ What To Do In Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay is honestly a playground for both adventure and relaxation. The very first thing you have to do is hop on a cruise—a day trip or overnight, it doesn’t matter. Gliding between those towering limestone cliffs is one of those “once in a lifetime” moments you’ll always remember.
Once you’re out on the water, the fun really begins. You can kayak (or ride a local sampan) through quiet lagoons, slip under natural arches, and explore iconic caves like Sung Sot (Surprise Cave) and Thien Cung (Heavenly Palace).
Some cruises even stop by floating villages so you can see what life is like in these unique communities. And of course, you can also swim in those calm, emerald-green waters.
On land, Cat Ba Island is perfect if you’re into hiking or want a peaceful beach day, while Ti Top Island rewards you with an amazing panoramic view after a short climb. If you’re craving a little adrenaline, try rock climbing on the limestone cliffs. Or head to the quieter neighboring bays of Bai Tu Long and Lan Ha for a more serene, less crowded version of Ha Long Bay’s beauty.
And honestly, if you book a tour, they’ll usually manage everything for you: transportation, activities, meals, and stops—so all you have to do is relax and enjoy the bay.

✅ My Ha Long Bay Experience
Tour Name: Ha Long Bay (Day Tour)
Price: $45 USD (kayaking/bamboo boat not included at first, but I ended up getting the full package anyway)
Included: Lunch — drinks not included
I booked my tour directly through my Hostel. They offer a few different options depending on how long you want to stay:
- Day Tour
- 2D1N Cruise
- 3D2N Cruise
From Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, the bus ride took around 4 hours. Once we arrived, our guide brought us straight onto the cruise for lunch. The meal was included (except for drinks), which I didn’t mind, although I did find it strange that they didn’t even include plain water. But the seafood? Surprisingly delicious!
After lunch, we explored one of the caves, then got the chance to ride a local sampan boat through quiet areas of the bay. The final part of the tour was a relaxed cruise around the bay while our guide explained the history, legends, and fun facts about Ha Long Bay.
Now… here’s the honest part.
The weather was pretty gloomy when I went—cloudy skies and a bit of rain—so the scenery didn’t match the dreamy, emerald-water photos I see online. It felt a little underwhelming, and I think my timing just wasn’t the best. Still, the cooler air made the ride comfortable, and I genuinely enjoyed the peaceful cruising and our friendly guide. Even if it wasn’t picture-perfect, it was still an experience I’m glad I had at least once.

✅ Tips For Ha Long Bay Tour
- Choose the day trip unless you’re really excited about sleeping overnight on a cruise. One day is enough to see the highlights.
- Bring a jacket or sweater. The wind on the cruise can get chilly, especially on gloomy or rainy days.
- Carry your own water bottle. Drinks aren’t usually included in the meals, so having your own saves money.
- Wear proper footwear. Water-resistant shoes or sandals are ideal, especially when climbing caves or walking on wet surfaces. You can keep flip-flops in your bag as backup.
- Apply sunscreen. Even on cloudy days, the reflection from the water can get you sunburned.
- If you’re not kayaking, take the local sampan ride. It’s relaxing and gives you a closer look at the quiet parts of the bay.
- Bring some cash. Small expenses like drinks, tips, or extra activities usually require cash.
- Protect your devices. Consider a waterproof phone pouch if you plan on kayaking or getting close to the water.
- Go early and stay flexible. Weather can change quickly, so having an open mindset helps you enjoy the experience no matter what.
- Don’t expect the Instagram filter version. The bay is beautiful, but weather plays a huge role—embrace whatever vibe you get!
✅ Final Thoughts
Ha Long Bay may not have given me the sparkling emerald waters I had imagined, but it still gave me something just as meaningful: a peaceful cruise, friendly people, and a chance to finally see a place I’d been dreaming about for so long. Not every trip turns out picture-perfect—and that’s okay. Travel is about the experience, the moments you keep with you, and the stories you get to tell afterwards.
Would I go again? Maybe on a sunnier day! Most of the photos I took didn’t turn out the way I hoped because of the gloomy weather, which was a bit frustrating.
But even with the clouds and rain, Ha Long Bay is still one of those places you should see at least once in your life. If you plan it right, I’m sure you’ll get to experience it at its most beautiful.
If you’re heading to Hanoi, definitely add Ha Long Bay to your itinerary—just keep your expectations flexible, your jacket ready, and your water bottle filled.
