Korean Food Lovers, You’ll Love Sweetree Restaurant in Ampang!

Korean chicken is my latest obsession. Yeah, thanks to my partner, who insists on feeding me good food every weekend. “Cheat days,” he calls it. I’m not much of an adventurous eater—I rarely order something new unless I’ve had a chance to taste a little of it first. So, chicken is always my safest bet. I have tried some Korean dishes before, such as Budae Jjigae and Ssam, and guess what? I still stick to Korean chicken. Haha.

On one of our many food hunts, we decided to go for a Korean meal. We had several options, but eventually, we settled on Sweetree. Though we had never been to this restaurant before, the great reviews it received caught our attention. Plus, we both dressed up for the date; we figured, why not choose a place a little further from our usual lunch spots?

📍 The Location

Sweetree is located in Ampang, in one of the shop lots along Jalan Ampang Putra. It’s a bit away from the usual crowded KL city spots, making it a nice place for a cosy meal. The restaurant has a few designated parking spaces right in front, but they fill up quickly, especially during peak hours. If you’re driving and the parking is full, you might need to find a spot a little further away and walk over.

The restaurant is easy to spot, so you won’t have trouble finding it! Here’s the map to help you find the place:

🎎 The Korean-Themed Interior

The moment we stepped inside, we felt like we had been transported straight to South Korea. The restaurant is beautifully designed with an authentic Korean atmosphere, from the warm lighting to the traditional wooden elements and decorative wall art. The space was well organized, creating a cozy yet vibrant ambience that felt welcoming.

Since the restaurant was packed when we arrived, we had to wait outside for about 20 minutes before being invited into the waiting area inside. The staff handed us a pamphlet explaining how to order, along with a big wooden spoon that had our waiting number on it. It was a cute and unique way to manage the queue. Luckily, we didn’t have to wait long—within 5 minutes, a waitress collected our spoons and guided us upstairs to our table on the second floor.

The second floor had an even more charming setup but what impressed me the most was the mini photo studio inside the restaurant— a dedicated space designed for photo shoots, complete with Korean-inspired backdrops. Whether you want to take fun photos with friends, a romantic couple shot, or just capture your outfit of the day, this little corner is the perfect spot. And the best part? It’s free for customers!

🕌 Muslim-Friendly & Halal

Wondering if Sweetree is halal? Yes, it is! You can dine here without any worries. In fact, they even have a prayer room for Muslim guests, which is a thoughtful addition.

🍽️ The Menu: Plenty of Choices!

Sweetree offers a wide variety of Korean dishes, from Kimchi Jjigae, Guk Mul Yori, Bibimbap, Bulgogi, Topokki, Chikin, Kimbap, and more. If you’re in the mood for BBQ, they’ve got that too! I couldn’t help but notice the table behind us—plates kept arriving one after another until their entire table was filled with food. That alone was a clear sign that the dishes here must be really good!

For our meal, we ordered:
Cheese Chicken (*18 pieces), a mix of Yang Nyeom (sweet & spicy) and Bul Dak (super spicy) flavours.

When the waitress served our order, she carefully rolled the melted cheese around the chicken—and it looked absolutely delicious. The cheese melted perfectly around the crispy chicken, adding a rich, creamy texture that balanced out the spiciness. It was my first time eating cheese chicken, and I loved it! I normally avoid cheese because of my lactose intolerance, but luckily, this one didn’t affect me much.

For those with a sweet tooth, they also offer desserts, though the selection is a bit limited.

👨‍🍳 The Owner Was Amazing, But the Staff Needs Improvement

At first, I didn’t interact with the owner much, but he approached us while we were waiting to pay. He was amazed by my height and even asked my partner, “Boyfriend? Husband?” I smiled and replied, “Boyfriend.” Then he excitedly offered to take a photo of us together.

Coincidentally, we were both wearing denim that day, and I loved how the picture turned out. The owner was so enthusiastic that he even asked if he could take my photo upstairs at the mini studio! He was surprised when I told him my age—he thought I was in my 20s. What a compliment! 90s babies still got it! Haha.

Now, let’s talk about the staff. While the owner is friendly, the service from the waitstaff could be better. They didn’t smile much, and their overall attitude didn’t feel welcoming. One incident that really upset me was when my partner asked a waitress to reheat and wrap the chicken with cheese, but instead, she just packed it to-go. Since she wasn’t Malaysian, I understand there might have been a language barrier, but it still annoyed me because I was still eating, and it completely changed my mood.

💰 The Price: A Bit Pricey, But Worth It

The food at Sweetree is high-quality, so, understandably, the prices are a little on the higher side. Still, it’s not crazy expensive—just a bit pricey for an everyday meal. But if you’re looking to treat yourself to authentic Korean food, I’d say it’s worth it.

⭐ Final Thoughts

Sweetree Restaurant is a great place for a fun Korean lunch date. Its cozy ambience, halal-friendly menu, and variety of dishes make it a solid choice for anyone craving Korean food. The cheese chicken is delicious, and I’m so glad I tried it!

While I loved the food and the unique Korean-themed interior, I do think the service could use some improvement. A little warmth and friendliness from the staff would have made the experience even better. That said, the owner’s enthusiasm made up for it.

Would I come again? Absolutely, yes! I’d love to return and try more from their menu.
