Oiso Korean Restaurant: The Closest to Authentic Korean Flavors

Over the past year, Korean food has gradually become one of my go-to meals. I probably eat it at least once a month now. While I’ve always had a soft spot for Korean chicken, my journey with other Korean dishes is still very much unfolding. So when a good friend of mine, who’s really into Korean culture, told me about Oiso Korean Restaurant, I knew I had to give it a try.

📍First Visit: I Went For The Spicy Grilled Chicken BBQ

On my first visit to Oiso, I decided to play it safe. I ordered the Spicy Grilled Chicken BBQ, which I knew I would absolutely love. The meal came as a set with rice, clear soup, and three vegetable side dishes—including kimchi, pickles, and sautéed veggies. It honestly felt like a mini buffet on my tray.

The side dishes—which, by the way, come with every single meal—are also refillable. You don’t have to order them separately, which is a nice bonus.

The portions were generous, and the presentation was clean and inviting.

My friend also ordered the fried seaweed roll. I gave it a try and actually really liked it! Maybe it was the crispy texture from being perfectly fried, or the fact that the seaweed flavor wasn’t too strong. It came with a light soy sauce for dipping, which added just the right touch of saltiness to bring everything together.

📍Second Visit: Getting Bolder with Tteokbokki Noodles

The second time, I went with my partner for lunch. This time, I felt a bit more adventurous and ordered the Tteokbokki Noodles, while my partner chose the Chicken Kimchi Stew.

I don’t think I’ve ever had tteokbokki before, but it was so delicious—chewy rice cakes and thick noodles covered in a spicy-sweet sauce that was super addictive—but the heat level knocked me out halfway through. 😂 I couldn’t finish it, but no regrets—it was worth every bite.

As good as mine was, my partner’s chicken kimchi stew totally stole the spotlight. I’m usually not a fan of kimchi, but this stew was rich, warm, and well-balanced that I almost forgot it even had kimchi in it. That’s how good it was.

💖What I Love About Oiso

Here’s what sets Oiso apart:

  • Set Meals: Every main dish comes as a complete set. Depending on your main meal, you get steamed rice, a bowl of light and comforting soup, and three side dishes (banchan)—classic Korean-style. 3 sides usually include classics like kimchi, pickled radish, and sautéed vegetables, but they might change slightly depending on the day. Bonus: the side dishes are refillable

  • Authenticity: If you’ve ever wondered what real Korean food tastes like, this place comes pretty close. The flavors are bold, rich, and comforting—not watered down or overly adjusted for local tastes. Whether it’s the spiciness of the tteokbokki sauce or the deep, savory broth of the kimchi stew, you can tell the recipes stay true to their roots

  • Cozy Vibes: Oiso has this casual and homey vibe that makes you feel comfortable as soon as you walk in. The space is clean and simply decorated, with a focus on the food rather than flashy design.

What’s on the Table

For anyone looking to get a taste of Korean cuisine, Oiso offers a wide variety of dishes that can suit many different tastes. Whether you’re a first-timer or already familiar with Korean food, there’s something here for everyone.

If you’re looking for a safe and satisfying choice, any of the chicken dishes are a great place to start—they’re easy to enjoy. But I’d definitely recommend that you explore beyond the usual.

From what I’ve tried, the flavors are bold but not overwhelming—just the right mix of spice and comfort, and I feel they would appeal to many people, especially those of us used to Asian-style cooking. I can’t speak for those who have actually been to Korea (they might have a different opinion), but personally, I feel like Oiso does a great job capturing that authentic Korean taste—rich, spicy, savory, and deeply comforting.

And if you’re wondering whether the food is halal—yes, it is! That makes it even more accessible for everyone to enjoy without worry. The price range is also pretty reasonable, with most dishes falling between RM24–RM40, depending on what you order.

Final Thoughts

Oiso might just become my new go-to spot whenever a Korean food craving hits. What I love most is how each dish gives me a little glimpse into Korean flavors—comforting, bold, and full of character.

Whether you’re new to Korean cuisine or ready to go beyond just the usual Korean chicken, Oiso is definitely worth a try. I know I’ll be coming back—and probably bringing more friends along next time!

Until then.

Xx, Hani. 🍜
