Pal Gae Ook (팔계옥) is a well-loved Korean BBQ spot in Kuala Lumpur known for its juicy, tender, and flavourful charcoal-grilled chicken. I’ve known about this place for quite some time, but honestly, I always assumed it would be too expensive, so I kept putting it off.
When my partner’s birthday came around, I wanted to treat him somewhere nice… somewhere different from our usual go-to places. After scrolling through a few options, I finally decided it was time to give Pal Gae Ook a try and treat him (and maybe myself) to something special.
It turned out nothing like I expected. The prices were incredibly affordable for food that tasted this good and felt so premium. We had such a great time, and I love that we always make sure to celebrate each other’s birthdays not just with gifts, but with great food too.
If you haven’t been to this restaurant yet and you’re thinking about going, here’s a little glimpse to help you decide.
✅ Where Is Pal Gae Ook Located?
We went to the Desa Sri Hartamas outlet, though they also have one at Suria KLCC. We picked this location mainly to avoid the crowd, and it turned out to be the perfect choice.
Pal Gae Ook doesn’t open all day like most restaurants. Their hours are from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. for lunch and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. for dinner, so make sure to plan your visit accordingly. We arrived about five minutes before 5 p.m., which turned out to be ideal. We were the first customers there, and it stayed quiet for about an hour before the dinner crowd slowly started to fill the place.
✅ What’s On The Menu?
The main highlight here is, of course, the Korean BBQ. You can choose between 300g of Charcoal Chicken Dakgalbi (Special Soy Sauce), 300g of Charcoal Chicken Dakgalbi (Spicy Sauce), or go all out with a whole Charcoal Mapduri Tang (Spicy).
If you enjoy variety, they also offer special cuts like chicken feet, boneless neck, chicken tail, and soft bone. Additionally, there are soups, noodles, and other add-ons available if you’d like to make your meal even heartier.
As for us, we went with both the 300g Charcoal Chicken Dakgalbi: one with special soy sauce and one spicy. We at first thought it wouldn’t be enough, but surprisingly, it filled us up completely and left us in a happy food coma! Each set also comes with leeks and corn, which pair perfectly with the grilled chicken. I especially loved the banchan (side dishes) that came with the meal—and the best part? You can refill them as much as you want!

✅ How Much Did I Pay?
The total for our meal, including drinks, was RM100.90. That’s surprisingly affordable for a Korean BBQ place like this; I’d expected it to be much more, especially considering the portion and quality of the chicken we had. I was genuinely surprised by how reasonable it was, and right then, I told my partner,
“We’ll definitely be coming back again.”

✅ The Staff and Ambience
We waited outside for about 5 minutes before the restaurant opened. Right on time, one of the staff members greeted us at the entrance and brought us to our table. Since there were no other customers yet, we got their full attention, which was really nice. We already knew what we wanted to order, so it didn’t take long for us to decide and let the staff know. Within a minute, they came to set up the charcoal grill, and soon after, our drinks, banchan, and chicken started arriving.
Once the grill was hot, one of the staff began preparing the chicken for us. He cut the pieces into smaller portions and grilled them right in front of us. He arranged everything neatly on the grill, even adding the corn and leeks to cook alongside. Watching him work was honestly impressive; he was so efficient and precise that it made the whole experience even more enjoyable.

The tables at the restaurant were neatly arranged, and we were seated at a section with a glass partition separating us from the next table. It felt private enough, even though the bench was shared. The overall vibe was casual and relaxed, nothing too formal, making it a great place to hang out with friends or loved ones. The decor had that classic Korean BBQ feel, complete with Korean music playing softly in the background, but it was not overdone. Just the right balance of cozy and authentic.

✅ Will I Come Again?
100% YES!
If you love Korean BBQ, I highly recommend this place. Everything we had tasted was amazing, and I couldn’t stop gushing about it even after we finished eating. It’s one of those rare spots where you leave not just full, but genuinely happy.
For my Muslim readers, this is a pork-free, Muslim-friendly Korean BBQ restaurant that uses halal-certified chicken. While the restaurant itself doesn’t hold an official halal certification (mainly because alcohol is served on the premises), all their meat comes from JAKIM-certified suppliers.
With food this good and such a wonderful dining experience, I’m already excited to come back!

Can’t wait for my next visit!
