My First-Ever Fish and Chips at Battered Fish & Chip Co. Kuala Lumpur

I once told my partner that I’d never eaten fish and chips.
Yes. Fish and chips.
Shocking, I know.

It’s such a simple, classic dish, yet somehow it never made it onto my plate. Maybe it’s because when you live in Malaysia (where food options are endless), something that sounds “simple” doesn’t exactly scream must-try.

One thing about my partner, though: whenever he wants me to try something for the very first time, he makes sure it’s the best version possible—the kind that leaves a lasting impression. Same story with tacos. I’d never had them either, and I’m pretty sure one day he’ll casually decide to hunt down the best tacos so that I can experience them properly. 😂

So recently, I finally had fish and chips for the first time. And no, this wasn’t just any fish and chips you randomly find in Malaysia. While there are plenty of versions around, we were looking for something more authentic—closer to what you’d actually find in England. That’s when we came across Battered Fish & Chip Co. on social media. Run by a British family, it immediately caught our attention.

Without a second thought, we decided to go.

✅ Where It’s Located

Battered is located inside REXKL, a repurposed building in downtown Kuala Lumpur that used to be a cinema. Today, it has been transformed into a community and cultural hub, bringing together creative spaces, independent businesses, and food vendors under one roof.

The food court is on the ground floor, and Battered is one of the vendors you’ll find there. What I really love about the whole place is the vibe. At first, I was a little confused and didn’t know where to sit—I assumed we had to stay near the vendor we ordered from. But then we were told that we could actually grab any seat in the area, which makes for a relaxed, flexible dining experience. No stress, no rules—just food and good vibes.

There’s also a great variety of food options. Besides fish and chips, you’ll find burgers, pizza, and local dishes—basically something for everyone. Right in the middle of the space, there’s even a bar, perfect if you want a drink while people-watching or just soaking in the atmosphere. The combination of diverse food, open seating, and creative energy makes the place feel casual, welcoming, and genuinely fun to hang out in.

✅ Battered Fish & Chip Co.

After taking our time with the menu, we both decided on the Chippy Tea, which includes the classic fish and chips along with a drink. I went for the curry sauce, while my partner chose mushy peas. For drinks, there were quite a few options to choose from, and we went with the Asam Boi Mojito and Yuzu Lemonade—both refreshing and perfect for balancing out a fried meal.

Ordering was pretty straightforward, and thankfully, there was no queue when we arrived (phew). We waited about 25 minutes for our fish and chips to be ready. Honestly, considering everything is freshly prepared, the wait felt reasonable—and it definitely paid off once the food arrived.

For RM34, the portion is impressively generous. A large piece of golden-battered fish rests on top of the fries, immediately catching our eyes with its size. The flat, chunky fries (or chips, as the British would call them) are tucked underneath—hearty, substantial, and begging to be dipped generously into sauce and savored slowly. To round out the meal, a slice of buttery bread sits on the plate, adding a simple, comforting touch that balances the richness of the fried elements.

The moment you take a bite, you can actually hear that satisfying crunch, which instantly tells you it’s been perfectly fried. Inside, the fillet is thick, tender, and juicy, with flaky flesh and a clean, fresh flavor that truly stands out. The light, delicate batter adds just the right amount of texture without ever overwhelming the fish, and it stays crispy rather than greasy from the first bite to the last. The fries are just as satisfying, perfectly seasoned and crispy, complementing the fish beautifully. Each bite strikes the perfect balance of crunch and softness, making it impossible not to appreciate the care that went into preparing it

As for the sauces, they really tie the whole plate together. My absolute favorite has to be the tartar sauce—it’s creamy, tangy, and works perfectly with the fish. The curry sauce comes in a close second—warm, comforting, and full of flavour. I’m personally not the biggest fan of mushy peas, but my partner really enjoyed them, so I’d say that option truly comes down to personal preference. You can also add some vinegar and a squeeze of lemon to season the plate to your liking.

At first, I thought the portion might not be enough, but halfway through, I realized I was already full. By the end, I had to coax myself to finish it—but in the best way possible.

Overall, the meal really made my day. I enjoyed it. I may not have enough experience yet to judge what the best British-style fish and chips should taste like, but for now, this is my benchmark. The portions are generous, the price feels reasonable, and there were no extra or hidden charges, which I genuinely appreciate.

✅ Would I Come Again?

Absolutely, yes.

For a first-ever fish and chips experience, this set the bar high. It’s simple, well-executed, and genuinely enjoyable. If I ever find myself craving fish and chips again, Battered Fish & Chip Co. will definitely be on my return list.

It’s also reassuring to know that the restaurant is Muslim-friendly, serving a pork-free and alcohol-free menu using only halal-certified suppliers and ingredients. They specialize in authentic English-style fish and chips with a crispy, non-beer batter, making it a comfortable and safe dining option for Muslims.

Whether you’re a first-timer like me or a long-time fan of British-style comfort food, this place is worth checking out. If you’re curious to explore more, you can view the full menu here: Battered.kl.
