I once told my partner that I’d never eaten fish and chips.
Yes.
Fish and chips.
Shocking, I know.
It’s such a simple, classic dish, yet somehow it never made it onto my plate. Maybe it’s because when you live in Malaysia (where food options are endless), something that sounds “simple” doesn’t exactly scream must-try.
One thing about my partner, though… whenever he wants me to try something for the very first time, he makes sure it’s the best version possible (the kind that leaves a lasting impression). Same story with tacos. I’d never had them either, and I’m pretty sure one day he’ll casually decide to hunt down the best tacos so that I can experience them properly. 😂
So recently, I finally had fish and chips for the first time. And no, this wasn’t just any fish and chips you randomly find in Malaysia. While there are plenty of versions around, we were looking for something more authentic… closer to what you’d actually find in England. That’s when we came across Battered Fish & Chip Co. on social media.
Run by a British family, it immediately caught our attention. Without a second thought, we decided to go.
✅ First Impressions
Walking into REXKL felt like discovering a completely different side of Kuala Lumpur. The building still carries traces of its old cinema days, but it’s now filled with independent businesses, creative spaces, cafés, and food vendors that give it an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the city.
Battered Fish & Chip Co. is one of the food vendors on the ground floor.
At first, I wasn’t entirely sure how the seating worked. My instinct was to sit somewhere close to the stall we’d ordered from, but one of the staff explained that we could choose any available table throughout the dining area.
I actually loved that idea.
It made the whole place feel relaxed and communal, almost like everyone was simply there to enjoy good food regardless of where it came from.
Another thing, it was nice to see the variety of food available around us. Besides fish and chips, there were burgers, pizzas, local Malaysian dishes, cafés, and even a bar sitting right in the middle of the space… perfect if you want a drink while people-watching or just soaking in the atmosphere.
It wasn’t just somewhere to grab lunch. It felt like somewhere you could easily spend an entire afternoon.
Luckily, there wasn’t much of a queue when we visited, so ordering was quick and straightforward. We placed our order, found ourselves a table, and settled in while waiting for our food.
✅ Location & Opening Hours
Battered Fish & Chip Co. is located inside REXKL, one of Kuala Lumpur’s most interesting lifestyle and cultural spaces.
If you’ve never been to REXKL before, it’s worth visiting even beyond the food. The building was once a historic cinema before being transformed into a creative hub filled with independent cafés, bookstores, art spaces, and local food vendors.

✅ What We Ordered
After spending a few minutes looking through the menu, we both decided on the Chippy Tea, one of their signature set meals that comes with fish and chips, a drink, and your choice of sauce.
I went with the curry sauce, while my partner chose the classic mushy peas. For drinks, I ordered the Asam Boi Mojito, and my partner went for the Yuzu Lemonade. Both turned out to be refreshing choices and paired surprisingly well with a fried meal, helping to balance the richness of the fish and chips.
Ordering was quick and straightforward, and since there wasn’t much of a queue that afternoon, all we had to do was find a table and wait. It took around 25 minutes for our food to be ready, which honestly felt perfectly reasonable considering everything is freshly prepared.
And when the plates finally landed on our table…
I immediately understood why people kept recommending this place.
The Fish & Chips
The first thing that caught my attention was the size of the fish.
It wasn’t just a small fillet sitting beside a pile of fries. Instead, a beautifully golden piece of battered fish rested proudly on top of a generous portion of chunky chips, almost covering them completely. A slice of buttered bread completed the plate, giving it that classic British comfort food feel.
For RM34, I honestly thought the portion was more generous than I expected.
Then came the first bite.
Before I even tasted the fish, I heard it.
That incredibly satisfying crunch as my fork broke through the crisp golden batter immediately told me it had been perfectly fried.
Inside, the fish was thick, wonderfully flaky, tender, and incredibly juicy, with a clean, fresh flavour that wasn’t masked by heavy seasoning. The light, delicate batter adds just the right amount of texture without ever overwhelming the fish, and it stays crispy rather than greasy from the first bite to the last, allowing the fish itself to remain the star of the dish.
As for the chips… they’re nothing like the thin fries we’re used to ordering with burgers.
These chunky British-style chips were crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and incredibly filling. They might look simple, but they complemented the fish perfectly and made the whole meal feel hearty and satisfying.

The Sauces
Of course, fish and chips wouldn’t be complete without the sauces.
Out of everything on the plate, my favourite was easily the tartar sauce. Creamy, slightly tangy, and incredibly refreshing, it paired beautifully with the crispy fish and somehow made every bite even better. I found myself reaching for it again and again.
The curry sauce came in a close second. It was warm, comforting, and packed with flavour without being overpowering. If you’re someone who enjoys richer flavours, I’d definitely recommend giving it a try.
As for the mushy peas… I have to admit they’re probably the only thing on the plate that didn’t quite win me over. I can understand why they’re considered a British classic, but they’re simply not something I’d order again. My partner, on the other hand, really enjoyed them, so I’d say this one comes down entirely to personal preference.
Another thoughtful touch was that the meal came with a wedge of lemon, and vinegar was available at the counter, allowing you to season the fish exactly the way you like it. A squeeze of lemon brightened the flavours, while a splash of vinegar added that classic tang often enjoyed with British fish and chips.
By this point, I completely forgot that this was my first time trying fish and chips. I was simply enjoying every bite.
When the food first arrived, I actually wondered if the portion would be enough. Halfway through the meal, I realised I had completely underestimated it.
Between the thick fillet, chunky chips, and generous accompaniments, it turned out to be far more filling than I expected. By the end, I was convincing myself to finish the last few bites… not because I was still hungry, but simply because it tasted too good to waste.
For someone trying authentic British-style fish and chips for the very first time, I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better introduction. Every bite reminded me why people speak so highly of British-style fish and chips.
✅ My Honest Thoughts
Do I have enough experience to say it’s the best fish and chips in Kuala Lumpur? Probably not.
But what I can say is this: from this moment on, Battered Fish & Chip Co. has become my benchmark. If I ever order fish and chips somewhere else, this will be the meal I’ll compare it to. The portions were generous, the quality matched the price, and I also liked that there were no hidden charges or unexpected surprises at the end of the meal.
I also appreciate that Battered Fish & Chip Co. is Muslim-friendly, serving a pork-free and alcohol-free menu using halal-certified suppliers and ingredients. Their signature fish is coated in a traditional-style batter made without beer, making it a comfortable choice for Muslim diners who want to experience authentic British-style fish and chips.
Would I come back?
Absolutely.
Whether you’re trying fish and chips for the very first time like I was, or you’re simply looking for a proper British-style version in Kuala Lumpur, I genuinely think this place is worth visiting.
