Birthdays are a mix of celebration and reflection for me. Every year, as the number on the calendar ticks upward, it feels like another chapter of life unfolds. When it comes to marriage, well, I’m still single. Maybe in two or three years? Who knows? 😄 But honestly, no regrets. My life feels almost perfect right now. To my parents, thank you so much for being the best parents in the world! Despite the challenges, you raised me with so much love and care. I love you both, now and always. 💕
When I say “almost perfect,” it doesn’t mean I’m swimming in wealth. For me, perfection is having things money can’t buy—love, health, peace of mind, and gratitude. Alhamdulillah. Looking back on my youth, I feel like I was a completely different person. Time, experiences, and mistakes shaped the version of me today, and for that, I’m thankful.
To all those in their early 20s, this post is for you. Here’s what I wish I’d known back then:
- Live in the Moment
Don’t take life too seriously. Enjoy the present because these moments won’t come back. - Marriage Can Wait
Don’t rush into marriage just because you graduated or feel pressured. It’s okay to take your time. - Financial Independence is a Must
Find a job and earn your own money. Don’t rely on your parents or wait for a partner to “save” you. - Value All Work
Whether it’s washing dishes, being a cashier, or cleaning, no job is beneath you. Every halal job matters. - Friends Will Fade
Treasure the friendships you have now. As you grow older, you’ll notice the circle gets smaller. - Walk Away from Toxicity
If your partner or friends treat you poorly, don’t hesitate to leave. You deserve better. - Heartbreak is Temporary
When you face a breakup, know that in a few years, you’ll look back and be grateful for the lessons. - Learn from Mistakes
Every mistake is a stepping stone. Reflect and grow from them. - Travel, Not Splurge
Save for experiences, not expensive items. A plane ticket will give you memories that last a lifetime. - Learn to Be Alone
Independence is empowering. You don’t need company to feel complete. - Take Care of Your Body
Start early. As you age, your health and skin will thank you. - Don’t Rush to Judge
You never truly know someone until you walk in their shoes. Be kind and empathetic. - Financial Smarts
Avoid unnecessary loans and save diligently. Create a safety net for yourself. - Be Yourself
You don’t need to follow the crowd. Embrace your uniqueness and stay true to who you are. - Trust, But Verify
Whether it’s a partner or a friend, don’t blindly trust anyone. Protect yourself. - Appreciate Family
No matter the ups and downs, your family will always be there for you. - Keep Secrets Safe
Some things are better left unshared—even with your best friend. - Plan and Achieve
Set goals every year and work toward them. Growth is fulfilling. - Enjoy Your Youth
Do what you love, take risks, and live boldly. Time waits for no one.
This list might seem overwhelming, but these lessons have shaped me into who I am today. If I could turn back time, I’d want my younger self to hear these words.
So, to everyone in their 20s: life isn’t a race. It’s a journey of discovering who you are and what you’re capable of. Make mistakes, cherish experiences, and most importantly, live with gratitude.
Here’s to more birthdays, lessons, and growth ahead! 🎂✨
X, Hani.
