KyoChon Review: Why I Keep Coming Back for Their Korean Chicken

As someone who takes Korean fried chicken very seriously (the obsession is real), discovering KyoChon felt like a delightful find.

At first, like many people, I honestly thought KyoChon was just another fast-food place for a quick meal. Well, I was wrong. It’s not fast food. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. KyoChon is a full-service restaurant that prepares every dish fresh, right when you order

Shout-out to my partner for introducing me to this place, because once I had that first bite, there was no turning back.

✅ What is KyoChon All About?

KyoChon is rooted in a philosophy. The name “KyoChon” comes from “Kyo” meaning wisdom and enlightenment, and “Chon” meaning village or town. The name was chosen to reflect a traditional Korean-style identity.

From their website, I found out they only use chickens that are:

  • Chilled, antibiotic- and hormone-free broiler chickens (specially bred chickens raised for their meat),
  • Grown in sealed-off, air-conditioned modern sheds, ensuring they are free from airborne viruses and diseases.
  • Aged just right (30–35 days) for that juicy, tender bite.

Good news if you’re into healthier options, they fry their chicken in premium canola oil, and use less batter. The benefit is clear: you get a tasty, crispy, expertly fried, and thinly-battered chicken piece that is both less oily and fatty than most other fried chicken. Plus, their imported sauces are 100% natural, MSG-free, and additive-free. Basically, you’re getting chicken that’s clean, honest, and full of love.

✅ Location & Vibe

I’ve tried two outlets so far: Bangi and IOI City Mall. Here’s the tea:

  • Bangi outlet: Unfortunately, my experience at this outlet wasn’t the best. The service has noticeably gone downhill. It used to be decent, but lately, it’s been quite disappointing—from getting our order wrong to skipping items that used to come with the set, like the seaweed soup.

On the bright side, the place is usually less crowded compared to outlets in shopping malls, so if you prefer a quieter dining experience, that’s a small plus.

  • IOI City Mall outlet: A much better experience overall. The space is clean and cozy, with a casual K-eatery vibe. Like many Korean restaurants, there’s upbeat Korean music playing in the background and a warm, welcoming layout. It’s lively without being too loud.

The service here was noticeably better too. Everything was served as it should be, and we even got a fresh salad with our order, which was a thoughtful touch that made the meal feel more complete.

✅ The Menu

KyoChon offers a variety of Korean fried chicken flavors, and here’s the delicious rundown:

🔥 Soy Garlic: Their signature flavor. Crunchy fried chicken brushed with a rich soy sauce and topped with garlic flakes. Slightly sweet, deeply savory, and incredibly aromatic.

🌶️ Shinhwa Series: My personal go-to. Smoky, spicy, and crafted with 24 ingredients for a bold, complex flavor. It’s seriously addictive if you love spicy food with depth.

🌶️ Red Pepper Series: This is their original “hot” flavor—crispy chicken coated in a spicy red pepper glaze that brings serious heat while still being flavorful. We always end up choosing this one!

🍯 Honey Series: Crunchy chicken in a lightly sweet honey batter, then brushed with their natural honey sauce. Sweet, comforting, and perfect if you’re not into spicy food.

🍯 Honey Garlic Series (Limited Time): A lovely balance of honey’s sweetness and garlic’s aroma, with just a little kick from green chillies. It’s a limited-time offer, so grab it if you spot it!

Other than their famous fried chicken, KyoChon also serves Korean dishes like bibimbap, tteokbokki, and even meat-free options for vegans. They’ve got sides, desserts, and plenty more to explore.

✅ What I Usually Order

I usually go for the KyoChon Chicken Combo, which is perfect for two people. Here’s what it includes:

  • 12 pcs Wingettes & Drumettes (Choice of 2 flavors. I always pick Shinhwa and Red Pepper)
  • 2 Steamed Rice
  • 2 Drinks
  • 2 Pickled Radish (Free)
  • 2 Seaweed Soup (Free)

All that for RM49.50—pretty worth it for freshly made, high-quality Korean fried chicken if you ask me.

The chicken deserves every bit of the spotlight. What I love most is how bold and flavorful it is. The sauce isn’t just lightly brushed on; it’s generously coated, so every bite is packed with rich, savory goodness. The outside is perfectly crispy, giving that satisfying crunch, while the inside stays juicy and tender, bursting with flavor. It’s the kind of chicken that makes you close your eyes for a moment and just enjoy.

And the sides? They quietly elevate the whole experience.

  • The pickled radish is cool, crisp, and refreshing, balancing out the richness of the chicken beautifully. I’d never even tried pickled radish before coming to KyoChon. But one bite in, and I was hooked.
  • The steamed rice is soft and comforting, just enough to fill you up without being too heavy.
  • As for the seaweed soup, I’ll be honest—it’s not really my thing. The seaweed has a bit of a fishy taste that I personally don’t enjoy, but if you’re into that, you might appreciate it as a light, warm side.

Is Kyochon Pricey?

While KyoChon may not fall into the budget-friendly fast food category, the prices are fair considering the quality of ingredients, generous portions, and freshly cooked-to-order meals.

Most individual sets range between RM20 to RM30, and combo meals (like the one I usually order) give great value if you’re dining with a friend or partner. It’s one of those places where you do pay a bit more, but you can genuinely taste the difference in freshness and flavor.

My Final Thoughts

I once came across someone on Instagram saying that KyoChon’s fried chicken “sucks”—and honestly, I was genuinely surprised. I don’t know what her experience was like, but speaking from mine, KyoChon has always delivered.

Sure, taste is subjective, and service might vary by outlet, but when it comes to the chicken itself? It’s been consistently flavorful, crispy, and satisfying every single time. For me, it’s one of those places I can go back to again and again without hesitation.

If you’re into Korean fried chicken, KyoChon deserves a spot on your foodie list

Oh, and worth mentioning—it’s halal, so more people can enjoy it with peace of mind.

Till my next Korean chicken craving.
Xx, Auri. 💛
