For the longest time, I thought KyoChon was just another fast-food chain. You know the kind. Place your order, wait a few minutes, collect your food, and you’re done.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
The first time my partner suggested we eat there, I wasn’t expecting much. I assumed it would be another quick fried chicken stop, no different from the many other chicken chains around Malaysia.
Instead, I discovered something completely different.
KyoChon isn’t fast food.
In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It’s a full-service Korean restaurant where every dish is prepared only after you place your order. That means you’ll wait a little longer for your meal, but once the food arrives, it’s easy to understand why.
One bite into their crispy chicken, and I was completely sold. Since then, KyoChon has become one of my favourite places whenever I’m craving Korean chicken.
✅ What is KyoChon All About?
KyoChon has been serving its signature fried chicken since 1991, when the first restaurant opened in the small city of Gumi, South Korea. The name “KyoChon” combines the Korean words “Kyo,” meaning wisdom or enlightenment, and “Chon,” meaning village, reflecting the brand’s belief in staying true to traditional values while serving honest, high-quality food.
That attention to quality isn’t just about how the chicken is prepared. From what I learned on KyoChon’s website, the brand is also particular about the chickens it uses. They source chickens that meet certain standards:
- Chilled, antibiotic- and hormone-free broiler chickens (specially bred for their meat)
- Raised in sealed, air-conditioned modern sheds to reduce exposure to airborne viruses and diseases
- Aged between 30 and 35 days to achieve a juicy, tender texture
The attention to detail doesn’t stop there. The chicken is fried in premium canola oil using a light batter, creating a crisp coating that feels noticeably less greasy while still delivering plenty of crunch. Their imported sauces are also made with natural ingredients, free from added MSG and artificial additives, allowing the flavours to shine without overpowering the chicken.
If you’re a fan of Korean fried chicken, I genuinely think KyoChon deserves a spot on your foodie list. Oh, and worth mentioning, it’s halal, so more people can enjoy it with peace of mind.
✅ First Impressions
Over the years, I’ve visited two KyoChon outlets so far: Bangi and IOI City Mall. While the food has been consistently good, I have to admit that my experience at each outlet has been quite different.
📍 KyoChon Bangi
My earlier visits to the Bangi outlet were enjoyable, but unfortunately, my more recent experiences haven’t been quite as positive.
The restaurant itself is usually quieter than the outlets inside shopping malls, which is great if you prefer a more relaxed dining environment. Finding a table has never really been an issue, and the atmosphere always feels calm.
The service, however, has been a little inconsistent.
On one visit, there were a few mistakes with our order. Another time, some items that normally came with our set, such as the seaweed soup, were missing altogether. There were also times when the order that arrived was completely different from what we had ordered.
None of these were major issues on their own, but they were noticeable enough to affect the overall experience. After a few experiences like these, I eventually stopped going back to this outlet.

📍 KyoChon IOI City Mall
Thankfully, my experience at the IOI City Mall outlet has been much better.
The restaurant has a bright, modern interior with a casual Korean dining atmosphere. Korean music plays softly in the background, and despite being located inside a busy shopping mall, it still feels comfortable enough to sit down and enjoy your meal without feeling rushed.
The service here has also been noticeably more consistent. Our food arrived exactly as ordered, complete with the complimentary sides, and everything felt well organised from the moment we were seated until we finished our meal.
One small detail I really appreciated was the fresh salad that came with our order. It wasn’t anything elaborate, but it added a nice refreshing contrast to the crispy fried chicken and made the meal feel a little more complete.
Based on my own visits, the IOI City Mall outlet would definitely be my recommendation if you’re trying KyoChon for the first time.

✅ The Menu & What We Ordered
If there’s one thing KyoChon does really well, it’s offering plenty of variety without making the menu feel overwhelming.
Of course, their famous Korean fried chicken is the main attraction, but the menu also includes classic Korean favourites like bibimbap, tteokbokki, fried rice, noodles, and a selection of side dishes. There are even meat-free options, making it a great choice if not everyone in your group is in the mood for chicken.
When it comes to their fried chicken, KyoChon offers several signature flavours to suit different taste preferences. Some of the most popular include:
- Soy Garlic – their signature flavour with a savoury soy and garlic glaze.
- Shinhwa – smoky, spicy, and packed with bold flavours.
- Red Pepper – sweet, savoury, and spicy with a satisfying kick.
- Honey – lightly sweet and perfect for anyone who prefers milder flavours.
If you’re visiting for the first time, I’d probably suggest starting with the Soy Garlic Series since it’s KyoChon’s signature flavour. Personally though, I always end up ordering the Shinhwa and Red Pepper series because I enjoy food with a bit more heat.

My Go-To Order
Whenever my partner and I visit KyoChon, we almost always order the KyoChon Chicken Combo, which is perfect for sharing between two people.
Our usual combo includes:
- 12 Wingettes & Drumettes
- Two flavours (we always choose Shinhwa and Red Pepper)
- 2 Steamed Rice
- 2 Drinks
- 2 Pickled Radish
- 2 Seaweed Soup
At RM49.50, I honestly think it’s one of the best-value meals on the menu.
The chicken is exactly why I keep coming back. I’ve tried quite a few fried chicken places over the years, but there’s something about KyoChon’s chicken that keeps pulling me back. Every piece arrives with a beautifully thin, crunchy coating that doesn’t feel heavy or greasy, while the chicken inside remains juicy and tender.
What really sets it apart, though, is the sauce. Each piece is coated generously, so each bite delivers the same bold flavour from beginning to end.
Since my partner and I always order two flavours, we’ve naturally developed our favourites.
🔥 Shinhwa Series is easily my top pick. It’s smoky, spicy, and packed with layers of flavour rather than just pure heat. The spice builds gradually, making it incredibly addictive if you enjoy food with a bit of a kick.
🌶️ Red Pepper Series is the one we order almost every visit. It has a lovely balance of sweetness, savouriness, and spice that makes it easy to keep reaching for “just one more piece.”
I’ve also tried the Soy Garlic Series, and it’s easy to understand why it’s become KyoChon’s signature flavour. Rich, savoury, and fragrant, it’s a great choice if you prefer something less spicy without sacrificing flavour.

🥢 The Sides
The sides might not steal the spotlight, but they definitely complete the meal.
Before discovering KyoChon, I’d never tried pickled radish. Now, I honestly can’t imagine eating Korean fried chicken without it. The cool, crunchy texture and slight tanginess help balance the richness of the chicken, giving every bite a refreshing contrast.
The steamed rice is simple but comforting, especially when paired with the stronger flavours of the chicken.
As for the seaweed soup, I’ll be honest… it’s probably the only part of the meal that isn’t for me. I find it has a slightly fishy taste that doesn’t quite suit my palate. My partner doesn’t seem to mind it, though, so I think this one really comes down to personal preference.

✅ Is Kyochon Worth The Price?
While KyoChon may not fall into the budget-friendly fast food category, I think the pricing is fair considering the quality of ingredients, generous portions, and made-to-order meals.
Individual meals generally range from RM20 to RM30, while combo meals offer better value if you’re dining with someone else.
The combo sets are especially worth considering because they usually include not only the chicken, but also steamed rice, drinks, pickled radish, and seaweed soup, making them a convenient choice for those who want a complete meal without needing to order additional sides separately. It also works well for sharing, especially if you want to try different chicken flavours in one visit.
For me, the biggest reason KyoChon feels worth the price is the chicken itself. You’re paying for carefully prepared chicken with a thin, crispy coating and flavours that are consistent from the first bite to the last.
Combined with the overall dining experience, it feels like more than just another fried chicken meal.
✅ Location & Opening Hours
KyoChon has grown into one of the most popular Korean fried chicken chains in Malaysia, with outlets across the country.
Over the years, I’ve visited both the IOI City Mall and Bangi branches, but if I had to recommend one, I’d personally choose the IOI City Mall outlet based on my overall experience.

✅ Final Thoughts
Korean fried chicken has become more widely available in Malaysia, but not every place delivers the same balance of flavour, quality, and overall dining experience. It takes something special for a restaurant to become a place I genuinely want to revisit.
For me, KyoChon does exactly that…
Of course, no restaurant is perfect. As I’ve experienced myself, service can vary depending on the outlet. But when it comes to the food, KyoChon has never given me a reason to stop coming back. I know exactly what I’m going to get every time I visit: crispy, flavourful chicken with sauces that are packed with character and taste that never fail to satisfy my Korean fried chicken cravings.
Would I return?
Without hesitation.
Being the first international Korean fried chicken chain to achieve JAKIM Halal certification, KyoChon makes it possible for more diners, including Muslim customers, to enjoy authentic Korean flavours with confidence and peace of mind.
