Indonesian food is quite similar to Malaysian food, but one thing I really enjoy about it is the variety of sambal. Even a simple plate of rice, chicken and vegetables can taste completely different depending on the sambal.
Take Ayam Penyet, Ayam Gepuk and Ayam Geprek, for example. They may look similar at first, but the difference comes down to how the chicken is prepared and, of course, the sambal that comes with it.
I used to be one of those people who thought all these dishes were basically the same. I would just call everything ayam penyet, but the more Indonesian food I tried, the more I started to appreciate the uniqueness of each dish.
It is also interesting to see how popular these dishes have become in Malaysia. There are so many restaurants specialising in either ayam penyet, ayam gepuk or ayam geprek, and each one has its own way of serving the dish. Of the three, though, ayam gepuk is the one I keep coming back to.
Ayam Gepuk Pak Gembus used to be my favourite until I noticed that the quality started going downhill, at least in Putrajaya, where the chicken became smaller and drier, and the sambal portion was way too small.
I have also tried Top Global, which was good too, but I did have an allergic reaction after eating there once. I cannot say for sure what caused it, but it made me a little hesitant to have it again.
Then I came across Ayam Gepuk Tok Mat. Since then, it has become my favourite, mainly because of how consistent it has been.
✅ About Ayam Gepuk Tok Mat
Ayam Gepuk Tok Mat is a Malaysian ayam gepuk brand that started in 2024, founded by Tok Mat, who is described as a lover of spicy food, especially ayam gepuk.
The idea was to serve ayam gepuk with flavours that suit Malaysian taste buds, with freshly prepared fried chicken served alongside their signature spicy sambal tumbuk.
Their tagline, “Tak Pedah Tak Ghaso,” pretty much sums up what you can expect here.
As for me, I think the sambal is what makes Ayam Gepuk Tok Mat worth talking about. I have tried quite a few ayam gepuk places, but Tok Mat’s sambal has the kind of spicy kick that makes a simple plate of rice and chicken so satisfying.
✅ My First Impression
The first time I tried Ayam Gepuk Tok Mat was actually through an online order. I enjoyed the food, but I had never visited the restaurant itself.
For months, I kept ordering it online until recently, when I decided to finally pay a visit and see what the place was like.
The restaurant at Presint 15 is actually quite spacious, even though it is located in one of the shoplots in Presint Diplomatik. The decor is simple and nothing fancy, but the tables are nicely spaced out, which makes the place feel comfortable and not too cramped.
The ordering process was straightforward too. You simply go to the counter, place your order and pay, then find a table to wait for your food.
Once your food is ready, the staff will bring it over to your table.
There were plenty of tables when I visited, and the restaurant was not packed with customers. I actually liked that because I could sit down and enjoy my meal without feeling rushed.
Another thing I liked is that the sambal Tok Mat, sambal kacang and drinks are free-flow. For someone who enjoys having extra sambal with their rice, this is definitely a nice little bonus.
✅ The Menu And What We Ordered
The menu at Ayam Gepuk Tok Mat is pretty straightforward. There are several ayam gepuk combinations, along with seafood, other dishes and add-ons. The main difference between the ayam gepuk sets is the side dishes that come with them.
I normally go for the Tok Mat Combo B, which comes with fried tofu and tempeh, along with rice, chicken, sambal, sambal kacang, kicap, cucumber, cabbage and a drink.
The first thing I noticed when my food arrived was that the amount of sambal looked a little less than what I normally get when ordering online. Thankfully, that was not really a problem because the sambal is free-flow.
The taste was also exactly what I remembered.
The chicken was a good size, and the portion was generous enough to leave me feeling satisfied. It has also been consistently tender every time I have had it, never dry, and goes really well with the sambal. You can choose between chicken breast or thigh, depending on which part you prefer.
For the sambal, you can choose between biasa, spicy and extra spicy, or go for sambal kacang instead.
I have tried all three levels, and honestly, I still go for spicy. Even the spicy one is already quite spicy for me. The extra spicy? That one made me cry. 😂
✅ Is The Price Worth It?
For the price, I think Ayam Gepuk Tok Mat is quite affordable. An easy choice for a casual lunch or dinner.
The ala carte sets start from RM12.90, while the combo sets start from RM13.90. There are four combo options in total, going up to RM16.90, depending on the sides you choose.
My usual Tok Mat Combo B is RM14.90, which I think is still a fair price for a proper meal.
The only thing to keep in mind is that ordering online can be a little more expensive. From my experience, the price can be around RM5 higher than ordering directly at the restaurant. So if you live nearby or happen to be in the area, I would personally dine in instead.
There are also a few add-ons if you want to make your meal a little more filling. You can add another piece of chicken for RM7.90, tauhu and tempe for RM3, or extra sambal Tok Mat and sambal kacang for RM3.50 each.
✅ Location And Opening Hours
Ayam Gepuk Tok Mat started and built its roots in Negeri Sembilan before expanding to other areas, including Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya, Putrajaya and Selangor, with plenty of outlets now available around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

Parking can be a little tricky as there are not many parking spots right in front of the shop. There is a dedicated public car park around Presint Diplomatik, so you may need to park there and walk a little.
It is not a major issue, but it is something to keep in mind, especially if you are visiting during a busy period.
✅ Will I Come Back?
Definitely.
I have eaten more ayam gepuk than I can probably remember, so at this point, I think I have a pretty good idea of which ones I enjoy and which ones I probably would not order again.
For me, what makes Tok Mat stand out is the consistency. I have ordered it many times, and the quality has remained pretty much the same. The chicken is still tender, juicy and a good size, the sambal still has that kick I enjoy, and the rice comes in a generous portion. I know I will get a satisfying meal every time I order it.
Even when I order online, the amount of sambal is generous every single time. That consistency is probably one of the biggest reasons why it has become, by far, the best ayam gepuk I’ve eaten.
My friend recently suggested that I try Ayam Gepuk Pak Gendut next, and I really want to try Ayam Gepuk Artisan too. Well, maybe I should. After eating this many ayam gepuk, I suppose I cannot say I have found the best one without trying more, right?
For now, Tok Mat still holds the top spot on my list.
