I once went through a terrible phase of having extremely dry lips. Not only were they dry, but they were also cracked and flaky. Every time I wore lipstick, it was embarrassing to see little flakes all around my lips.
It looked awful.
I still remember going on a date during that time. I kept excusing myself to the restroom just so I could retouch my lipstick and remove the flakes. It was frustrating because no matter what I did, my lips never looked smooth.
Looking back, I think the main cause was my lipstick obsession at the time. For months, I was constantly experimenting with different lipsticks, especially cheaper ones, and almost all of them had a matte finish. I didn’t realize how drying they were until my lips started suffering.
I tried almost every remedy I found online. Vaseline, lip balms, essential oils, and various DIY treatments. Unfortunately, nothing seemed to work. Then one day, I decided to fully commit to healing my lips instead of looking for a quick fix.
Here are the things that finally helped me.
✅ Invest in a Good-Quality Lip Balm
Whenever someone tells me they have dry lips, there’s only one lip balm I always recommend: Eucerin Lip Active.
This was honestly the product that made the biggest difference for me. After using it consistently, I noticed my lips becoming softer and healthier within a week.
What I love about this lip balm is that it’s specifically formulated for dry, rough, and sensitive lips. It contains ingredients such as dexpanthenol and vitamin E, which help support the skin’s natural healing process while protecting lips from further moisture loss. It also provides long-lasting hydration without feeling overly greasy or sticky.
When my lips were at their worst, I applied it throughout the day from morning until night. I also made sure to apply a generous layer before going to bed. Overnight is when our skin repairs itself, so giving your lips that extra moisture while you sleep can make a huge difference.
✅ Don’t Wear Matte Lipsticks. Like, Ever.
If your lips are already dry, or if you’re someone who’s naturally prone to dry lips, matte lipsticks are probably not your best friend.
Many matte formulas are designed to stay put for hours, which often means they contain ingredients that can leave your lips feeling drier. They also tend to highlight every crack, line, and flake on your lips. Instead of covering the problem, they usually make it more obvious.
While your lips are healing, switch to moisturizing lip products instead. Tinted lip balms, lip oils, satin-finish lipsticks, and creamy lipsticks are all much better options. These products add moisture and help your lips look smoother rather than emphasizing dryness.
Trust me, no lipstick looks good on severely dry lips, no matter how beautiful the shade is. So until your lips have fully recovered, matte lipstick is a big no-no.
Personally, I still avoid matte lipsticks because I never want to go through that dry, flaky lip phase again.
✅ Exfoliate Your Lips With Natural Ingredients
One simple method that helped me was using a homemade lip scrub made from sugar and honey.
Simply mix a small amount of sugar with honey and gently massage it onto your lips using circular motions. The sugar helps remove dead skin while the honey provides moisture and soothing properties.
The important thing is to be gentle.
Do not scrub aggressively thinking it will remove the flakes faster. Your lips are delicate, and excessive scrubbing can create tiny injuries that make the dryness even worse.
After rinsing off the scrub, immediately apply a lip balm or a thin layer of Vaseline to lock in moisture.
I usually did this 2 to 3 times a week, and it helped keep the flaky skin under control while my lips healed.
✅ Stop Licking and Peeling Your Lips
I know how tempting it is to lick your lips when they feel dry or peel off the flaky skin hanging from your lips. Trust me, I used to do both all the time.
The problem is that licking your lips only provides temporary relief. Once the saliva evaporates, your lips often end up feeling even drier than before.
As for peeling the dry skin, it might feel satisfying in the moment, but it can actually slow down the healing process. Sometimes you’re not just removing dead skin. You can accidentally pull away skin that hasn’t fully healed yet, which can leave your lips feeling sore and irritated.
Whenever I felt the urge to lick or peel my lips, I would apply lip balm instead. It kept my lips comfortable and prevented me from making the dryness worse.
✅ Drink Plenty of Water
This might sound like the most basic advice ever, but it genuinely matters.
Your lips don’t have oil glands like the rest of your skin. Because of this, they’re much more vulnerable to dryness and dehydration. When your body isn’t getting enough water, your lips are often one of the first places where you notice the effects.
No matter how many lip products you apply, they can only do so much if your body is dehydrated from the inside.
Make it a habit to drink water consistently throughout the day rather than waiting until you’re thirsty. If you’re spending time in air-conditioned rooms, exercising regularly, or living in hot weather, your body may need even more water than usual.
While hydration alone won’t magically fix dry lips overnight, it plays an important role in keeping your lips healthy from the inside out. Combined with a good lip balm, staying hydrated helped speed up the healing process significantly.
Think of it this way: lip balm works on the outside, while water works from the inside. You need both if you want healthy, smooth lips.
Final Thoughts
Healing dry and cracked lips doesn’t happen overnight. It took me weeks of being consistent before I saw a major improvement. But once I stopped using drying lip products, started moisturizing properly, exfoliated gently, and drank more water, my lips finally recovered.
In fact, all of the tips I’ve shared in this post are exactly what I did to heal my lips. Years later, I still follow these habits, and thankfully, I haven’t had dry or cracked lips again. That’s why I wanted to share my experience with you. Hopefully, these tips will help you the same way they helped me.
If you’re currently dealing with dry, flaky lips, don’t give up. Be patient, stay consistent, and focus on repairing your lips rather than covering up the problem with more lipstick.
I know how frustrating it can be to look in the mirror and see cracked, flaky lips staring back at you. But if my lips could recover, there’s a good chance yours can too.
Take care!
