I’ve always believed that some food memories are worth chasing.
A few years ago, I visited a little place called Flat Top Grill Corner with a group of friends, and ever since then, I’ve never stopped talking about it. The grilled chicken was unbelievably good, the portions were generous, and the quality honestly felt like something you’d expect from a much more expensive restaurant.
I’d been telling my partner about that restaurant for years. Every time we talked about grilled chicken, Flat Top Grill somehow found its way into the conversation. So one weekend, we finally decided to make the trip.
I searched for Flat Top Grill on Google Maps, followed the directions, and before long, we found ourselves standing outside a place called Fifty Six Café in Cheras Alam Damai. For a moment, we assumed the restaurant had simply moved to a new location.
It hadn’t.
Instead, we’d accidentally discovered an entirely different café.
At first, I was a little disappointed because I’d spent so long hyping up the original Flat Top Grill. But since we were already there, we figured… why not give it a try?
Who knows? Maybe we’d end up discovering a new favourite instead.
✅ About Fifty Six Café
After looking around for a few minutes, everything finally clicked when I spotted the familiar Flat Top Grill logo on the wall.
It turned out that Google Maps hadn’t taken us to the wrong place after all.
Fifty Six Café isn’t a relocated Flat Top Grill. Rather, it’s a collaborative café that brings together several local brands under one roof, creating a casual space where visitors can enjoy Western food, coffee, desserts, and more in a single location. One of the featured brands is Flat Top Grill Corner, which specialises in grilled Western dishes, alongside concepts such as Kopi dan Balut and Kapcai Moto Gear.
Rather than operating with a single menu, each brand contributes its own specialties, giving customers a wider variety of food and drinks to choose from without having to visit multiple places.
Once I understood the concept, I could appreciate what Fifty Six Café was trying to create. It wasn’t trying to replace the Flat Top Grill I remembered. It was offering a different dining experience built around several local brands sharing the same space.
✅ First Impressions
The café has a cosy industrial-inspired interior, with exposed concrete elements, muted grey tones, and warm cream-coloured walls that give the space a softer, more welcoming feel. It doesn’t rely on flashy decorations. Instead, the simple design creates a relaxed atmosphere that’s comfortable enough to linger over a meal.
There are fewer than ten dining tables, and when we arrived, only one group was already there. It made the whole experience feel calm and unhurried, which was a nice change from the usual busy café scene.
For the ordering system, instead of waiting for a server to come to your table, you’re expected to head straight to the counter, pick up a menu, decide what you’d like, place your order, and pay upfront. Once that’s done, you’ll be given a table number, and the staff will bring your food over when it’s ready.
It’s a straightforward system, and since the café wasn’t particularly busy during our visit, everything felt organised despite there being only one staff member managing the front of house.
While waiting for our food, I noticed a shelf filled with board games, including classics like Snakes and Ladders and a few others. It was a nice little touch that added to the café’s relaxed vibe. I could easily imagine groups of friends spending an afternoon here over good food and a few rounds of games.
Our food took around 30 minutes to arrive. Considering everything appeared to be cooked fresh, I didn’t mind the wait too much. It gave us time to settle in, chat, and slowly adjust our expectations.
After all, we weren’t at the restaurant we’d originally planned to visit anymore.
Now, it was time to judge Fifty Six Café on its own.
✅ The Menu & What We Ordered
After spending a few minutes looking through the menu, we decided to stick with what we’d originally come for… something from the grill.
As expected, the menu is heavily focused on Western cuisine, with grilled chicken, lamb, and other hearty dishes taking centre stage. If you’re a fan of grilled meals, you’ll find plenty of options to choose from.
Since Fifty Six Café also brings together different food concepts, there’s more than just grilled food on offer. You can also order a selection of coffee, matcha, and other café-style drinks, making it a nice place to drop by even if you’re only after a relaxing afternoon with a drink in hand.
Near the counter, I also noticed a display of cakes and desserts. There weren’t many choices available during our visit, so I’m not sure if they’d already sold out or if the selection changes daily. Even so, it’s a nice addition for anyone who wants to enjoy a slice of cake with coffee or celebrate a small occasion without having to look elsewhere.
🍗 What We Ordered
Grilled Chicken Set
I ordered the Grilled Chicken Set, which came with fries, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and black pepper sauce.
I’ll admit, the first bite immediately reminded me that this wasn’t quite the same Flat Top Grill I’d visited years ago. The flavours were different, and the presentation had changed too, so there was a tiny moment of disappointment.
That said, once I stopped comparing the two restaurants and judged the meal on its own, I genuinely enjoyed it.
The chicken was tender, juicy, and well-marinated, with a lovely smoky char from the grill that added plenty of flavour. On its own it was already delicious, but dipping each bite into the black pepper sauce made it even better.
Speaking of the sauce, I thought they got it just right. It wasn’t overly thick or watery, and the peppery flavour was bold without overpowering the chicken. Personally, it’s exactly the kind of black pepper sauce I enjoy.
The sides were a little more mixed for me.
The mashed potatoes weren’t quite as creamy as I’d hoped, but they were still satisfying enough to complete the meal. The coleslaw, however, leaned a little too heavily on the mayonnaise for my taste. I found myself mixing it with the mashed potatoes to balance out the richness, which actually worked quite well.
Overall, it was still a satisfying plate of food with portions generous enough to leave me completely full.
Lamb Grill Set
My partner went with the Lamb Grill Set, which was served with the same sides of fries, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and black pepper sauce.
The lamb was pleasantly tender and sliced thin enough that every bite was easy to enjoy without being chewy. It had a nice grilled flavour and paired well with the same black pepper sauce, making it another satisfying option for anyone who prefers lamb over chicken.
Just like my meal, the portion was impressively generous. By the time we’d finished eating, we both agreed that nobody would be leaving hungry.
Peach Tea
And of course… I couldn’t resist ordering the Peach Tea. If you’ve read my other food reviews, you’ll know I have a bit of a weakness for peach tea.
It was light, refreshing, and exactly what I wanted alongside a grilled meal. The sweetness wasn’t overpowering, making it a great palate cleanser between bites of the rich black pepper sauce.
Would I order it again?
Without even looking at the menu first. 😄
✅ Is Fifty Six Café Worth the Price?
If you’re planning to dine here, I’d recommend going straight for one of the mixed grill sets rather than ordering individual dishes. Prices for à la carte items generally range from RM13 to RM30, while the mixed grill sets are priced between RM24 and RM38, depending on your choice of meat. Since each set already comes with fries, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and black pepper sauce, I think they offer much better value for money.
Our meal came to around RM65, which included a Grilled Chicken Set, a Lamb Grill Set, and a Peach Tea. For two people, I thought that was a pretty reasonable amount to spend on a Western meal.
The portions were generous, and each set felt complete without needing to order any extra side dishes. We both left feeling comfortably full, which is always a good sign.
Considering the portion sizes, quality of the grilled meats, and the overall dining experience, I think the pricing is fair and comparable to other cafés serving Western food.

Fifty Six Café is located in Alam Damai, Cheras, making it a convenient spot if you’re looking for a casual Western meal without having to drive into the city centre. The café isn’t particularly large, but its cosy atmosphere makes it a nice place to unwind over lunch or dinner.

✅ Final Thoughts
Looking back, I think the biggest challenge wasn’t the food. It was my expectations.
I’d spent years remembering one particular meal from the original Flat Top Grill, so it was almost impossible not to compare the two.
On its own, Fifty Six Café is a pleasant place to enjoy a casual Western meal. The grilled chicken was juicy, the lamb was tender, the portions were generous, and I genuinely enjoyed the black pepper sauce. Add in the relaxed atmosphere and board games, and it’s easy to see why people like spending time here.
Will I be coming back?
Probably not.
Not because I had a bad meal, but because I’ll always be chasing the memory of that original Flat Top Grill experience. Still, if you’re around Alam Damai and looking for a hearty grilled meal in a cosy café setting, Fifty Six Café is well worth a visit.
Sometimes, the food isn’t competing with other restaurants.
It’s competing with our memories.
