If you’ve never been here before, Ipoh is actually full of interesting spots waiting to be explored. These days, some of the most popular attractions include the vibrant Ipoh street art and the growing number of hipster cafés that give the city its modern charm while still keeping its old-town soul.

As someone who grew up in Ipoh, I can honestly say this city is perfect for a weekend trip, even when your time is limited. It’s slow-paced, easy to explore, and somehow always feels comforting no matter how many times you come back.

So if you’re planning a short getaway soon, here are 4 places in Ipoh worth checking out for your weekend trip.

1. Taman Rekreasi Gunung Lang, Ipoh

Best for: nature lovers & family outings

This place is calm, green, and really beautiful. It feels like a mini lake park surrounded by dramatic limestone hills. To get into the main area, you actually need to take a short boat ride across the lake, and the ticket price is super affordable:

• Adults: RM3.00
• Children / Senior citizens: RM1.50

What makes it special:

• You can see animals like ostriches, deer, monkeys, and fish that you can feed
• Plenty of scenic spots for photos (it’s also a popular pre-wedding photoshoot location)
• The park is spacious with gazebos, perfect for picnics

Best time to visit: Morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat

2. Gua Kek Look Tong, Ipoh

Best for: nature, spiritual vibes & photography

Even though this is a Buddhist temple, it is open to everyone regardless of religion. “Kek Look Tong” means Cave of Great Happiness, and the name really fits the feeling you get when you step inside.

What you can expect:

• A huge limestone cave with impressive Buddha statues
• A peaceful back garden with a reflexology path and a turtle pond
• Cool and refreshing air inside the cave, almost like natural air-conditioning

Important tips:

• Wear comfortable shoes because there are stairs and rocky paths
• Bring drinking water
• Be careful with your belongings because there are wild monkeys around, like many temple areas in Malaysia

This is one of those places where you naturally slow down without even trying.

3. Funtasy House Trick Art, Ipoh

Best for: content creators, families, and group fun

If you love interactive spots where you can take creative and funny photos, this place is a must. Funtasy House is filled with 3D trick art that makes your photos look like you’re part of the scene.

📸 Staff are also around to help take photos and guide you on poses, which makes the experience even easier and more fun.

4. Kellie’s Castle, Batu Gajah

Best for: history lovers & architecture fans

Technically this is not inside Ipoh city, but it is only about a 30-minute drive away, so it’s definitely worth adding to your itinerary.

This unfinished mansion was built by William Kellie Smith and is linked to mystery, love stories, and local legends. If you love old buildings with dramatic vibes, this place really stands out.

Tickets:

• Adults: RM5.00
• Children: RM4.00

Parking: RM2.00

Tips:

• Come early morning or late afternoon because midday can be really hot
• Bring water and a hat for comfort

The place has a strong historical atmosphere, and it’s easy to imagine how grand it was meant to be.
