Some restaurants seem impossible to escape.

It didn’t matter if I was scrolling through Instagram, or TikTok. Somehow, Thong Bowl always found its way onto my screen. One person was recommending it, another was filming their lunch, and before I knew it, I was seeing it everywhere.

After a while, I gave up trying to ignore it.

“Is it really that good?” I kept wondering.

Well, curiosity finally won.

One weekend, my partner and I decided it was finally time to see what all the fuss was about. Honestly, I was already excited. Hungry, slightly dramatic, and more than ready to eat. 😂

Since it was our first visit, we kept things simple. We ordered two of their signature noodle bowls, grabbed a couple of drinks from Thong Cha, and settled in to find out if Thong Bowl really deserved all the attention it had been getting.

Spoiler alert…

I finally understood why so many people keep coming back.

Known for its Thai-inspired noodle dishes, Thong Bowl has built a loyal following thanks to its rich broths, premium beef, and customisable bowls. Its biggest claim to fame is the Malaysia Book of Records title for the Biggest Thai Beef Noodle, a massive sharing bowl that’s become a favourite challenge for families and groups.

Beyond the giant bowl, Thong Bowl offers a wide variety of noodle dishes, allowing customers to customise everything from the type of noodles and spice level to additional toppings. From comforting beef noodles to rich, creamy tom yum, the menu offers plenty of variety, making it easy to find something that suits your taste.

Most outlets also feature Thong Cha, the restaurant’s sister brand specialising in Thai milk tea and other refreshing drinks, making it easy to complete your meal without having to go anywhere else.

✅ First Impressions

The moment we arrived, it was obvious why Thong Bowl had become such a well-loved spot. The restaurant was packed.

For a brief moment, I honestly thought we’d have to abandon our lunch plans and look for somewhere else because waiting wasn’t an option. I was starving, and when I’m hungry, my patience disappears surprisingly fast. 😂

Luckily, there was one last table for two.

We were the final customers to get seated before a queue started forming outside. Everyone who arrived after us had to wait, which immediately told me this place wasn’t just popular on social media. People were genuinely coming here for the food.

The atmosphere matched the crowd perfectly. Every table was occupied, conversations filled the room, and steaming bowls of noodles made their way out of the kitchen one after another. Despite how busy it was, everything seemed to run like clockwork. It wasn’t exactly quiet, but it wasn’t overwhelmingly loud either. It had that lively-but-you-can-still-hear-your-partner kind of atmosphere that made the restaurant feel energetic without becoming chaotic.

The only thing I wasn’t a huge fan of was how close the tables were to each other. We could easily hear conversations from the tables next to us. Not because we were being nosy… the seating layout simply made it impossible not to. 😆 If you’re looking for a quiet lunch with plenty of privacy, this probably isn’t the place. But if you’re there for a comforting bowl of noodles and don’t mind a bit of buzz around you, it all becomes part of the experience.

✅ The Menu & What We Ordered

The menu at Thong Bowl offers far more than its famous giant sharing bowl.

Besides its signature Thai beef noodles, you’ll also find creamy tom yum noodles, dry-style noodles, rice dishes, appetisers, and a variety of sides. I also liked that every bowl could be customised, allowing you to choose your preferred noodles, spice level, and extra toppings to suit your taste.

My partner and I have a golden rule whenever we eat out.

We never order the same thing.

Why settle for one dish when you can sneak bites from each other’s bowl? Double the food, double the fun. 😆

Since I’d been craving something sour, I ordered the Creamy Tom Yum Mama Mee, while my partner chose the Sliced Australian Beef Noodles so we could compare both styles.

To complete our meal, we also ordered drinks from Thong Cha. I picked the Thai Green Milk Tea, while my partner went with the Classic Thai Milk Tea.

As the bowls arrived at our table, I couldn’t wait to find out if Thong Bowl really deserved all the hype it had been getting.

• Here’s how it went down:

Creamy Tomyum Mama Mee 

The presentation was fairly simple. Nothing overly fancy, just a comforting bowl of creamy orange-hued broth topped with three chicken balls, two prawns, two squid rings, and… a raw egg yolk sitting right in the middle.

I’ll admit, I was a little sceptical. In fact, I even asked my partner if he could remove it for me. 😂 Instead, he convinced me to stir it into the broth, promising it would make everything richer and creamier.

He was right.

The egg completely disappeared into the soup, creating an incredibly silky broth without adding any unusual taste. If I hadn’t seen the yolk before mixing it in, I honestly wouldn’t have known it was there.

From the very first spoonful, the broth hit every note I was hoping for. It was rich, creamy, tangy, and spicy, with that unmistakable tom yum kick that lingered just long enough without becoming overwhelming. I had been craving something sour, and this bowl delivered exactly that.

The only part I wasn’t completely sold on was the noodles. Thong Bowl uses instant-style Mama Mee for this dish, which certainly fits the concept, but I personally think Thai rice noodles would have complemented the broth even better. It’s purely a personal preference though. Flavour-wise, I’d happily order this again.

Sliced Australian Beef Noodles 

My partner’s bowl looked generous when it arrived, but after digging in, we both noticed the same thing. There simply wasn’t enough broth, leaving the noodles to soak up most of the soup. Interestingly, the customer sitting next to us had noticeably more broth in their bowl, so I’m guessing ours may have just been one of those small kitchen inconsistencies.

Thankfully, the broth itself was excellent.

Deep, savoury, slightly tangy, and packed with flavour, it didn’t need any extra seasoning to bring it to life. Unlike Vietnamese pho, where you usually customise the broth yourself with herbs and sauces, this felt complete from the very first sip.

As for the toppings, the braised beef was beautifully tender and full of flavour, while the meatballs were satisfying enough without being particularly memorable. The sliced Australian beef, however, was a little disappointing. It was noticeably chewier than expected, and we ended up leaving most of it behind.

Overall, I really enjoyed the bowl, but I do think the dish would have been much better with a little more soup and more tender slices of beef.

Thong Cha

No Thai meal ever feels complete without a glass of Thai milk tea. Luckily, Thong Bowl has its own sister brand, Thong Cha, so we didn’t have to go searching for one afterwards.

I started with the Thai Green Milk Tea, which was smooth, creamy, and lightly fragrant with a pleasant jasmine aroma. The sweetness was nicely balanced, making it an easy drink to enjoy alongside my spicy tom yum noodles.

Then I made the mistake of trying my partner’s Classic Thai Milk Tea. It was sweeter, richer, and somehow even more satisfying. My partner thought it was a little too sweet, while I absolutely loved it. Before long, we ended up swapping drinks halfway through lunch because I simply couldn’t stop reaching for his.

No regrets. 😂

✅ Is Thong Bowl Worth the Price?

Thong Bowl sits somewhere in the mid-range category, which I think is fairly reasonable for a meal inside a shopping mall.

Most noodle bowls are priced from around RM20 onwards, while drinks from Thong Cha are roughly RM10 each. For our visit, the total came to around RM60 for two noodle bowls and two drinks.

Considering the quality of the ingredients, generous portions, and rich, flavourful broths, I walked away feeling satisfied with what we paid. I also like that you’re able to customise your bowl by choosing your preferred noodles, spice level, and even adding extra toppings if you want something a little more filling.

Overall though, I still think Thong Bowl offers good value for money. The portions are generous, the flavours are bold, and the ability to customise your bowl makes the experience feel a little more personal.
