Kayaking at Putrajaya Lake Recreation Centre: A Beginner-Friendly Experience

The first time I went kayaking, I said yes before I even had the chance to overthink it.

Which is actually funny… anything involving water has always scared me a little because I can’t swim, but at the same time, I’ve always been the type of person who loves trying new things.

Outdoor activities? I’m always in.
Adventures? Even better.

So kayaking had secretly been on my wishlist for the longest time—one of those things I kept telling myself, “One day, I’m going to try that.”

That “one day” finally happened when a friend asked if I wanted to join him for kayaking one morning. And honestly, I instantly agreed. No hesitation. Partly because I was excited and partly because I trusted him enough to believe I wouldn’t accidentally end up floating away dramatically in the middle of the lake. 😂 Plus, he had experience with kayaking, so knowing he could handle it and guide me made me feel a lot calmer.

And honestly, living in Putrajaya makes spontaneous adventures like this even easier. There are so many beautiful spots for water activities here that all you really need to decide is your budget and the kind of view you want for the day.

✅ Location: Putrajaya Lake Creation Center

We went kayaking at Putrajaya Lake Recreation Center, which is located not too far from the wetland park in Putrajaya. The place is quite popular for water activities, especially during weekends, and they offer a variety of activities for visitors who want to spend some time outdoors. If you’re curious to know more about the activities and facilities there, you can check out more information [here].

Since it was my very first kayaking experience, we both agreed that renting a double kayak would be the safest and most comfortable option. I sat in the front while my friend took charge at the back, handling most of the steering and paddling.

The rental price was very affordable at just RM20 per hour for a double kayak, which I think is really reasonable for such a fun activity. Considering the experience, the scenery, and the quality time spent outdoors, it was definitely worth it.

✅ The Staff Were Well-Trained and Knowledgeable

After getting our tickets, we went straight to the tent area where the staff were waiting. First, we needed to fill in and sign a form before starting the activity. The staff then helped us put on our safety jackets and made sure everything was properly secured, which honestly made me feel more at ease as a first-timer.

After that, one of the staff members brought us to our kayak and asked whether it was our first time kayaking. When I told him it was mine, he immediately took the time to teach me the basics, especially how to hold and use the paddle correctly. He also explained the safety guidelines, including which areas of the lake we were allowed to explore and which areas we should avoid.

His clear instructions and friendly attitude made the experience feel less intimidating for someone like me who had never tried kayaking before. I really appreciated the professionalism he showed.

Things You Should Know Before Kayaking

1. No experience needed (beginner-friendly)

You don’t need any kayaking experience to try this activity. At Putrajaya Lake Recreation Centre, the staff will guide you on how to paddle and control the kayak, so even first-timers can feel comfortable and confident.

2. Double kayak is better for beginners

If it’s your first time kayaking, a double kayak is highly recommended. It feels more stable on the water, and you can let the person behind handle most of the steering while you get used to paddling at your own pace.

3. Affordable activity

One of the best things about kayaking here is the price. A double kayak rental is around RM20, making it a very budget-friendly outdoor activity in Putrajaya for a weekend outing or casual adventure.

4. Wear comfortable clothes

Expect to get a little wet, so it’s best to wear light, comfortable, and quick-drying clothes. Avoid anything heavy or anything you wouldn’t want splashed with water.

5. Suitable even for non-swimmers (with caution)

Even if you can’t swim, you can still try kayaking as long as you wear a life jacket at all times and follow the safety instructions properly. It helps a lot to go with someone experienced as well.

✅ Would I Do It Again?

The first time I stepped into the kayak, I actually felt more excited than nervous. I’m just lucky my friend was there with me, because I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have managed the kayak on my own as a beginner. I was still figuring out how to use the paddle properly, but it was actually fun learning as we moved across the water. Instead of feeling pressured to be perfect, I could simply enjoy the experience, the calm lake, and the beautiful scenery around us.

We also got lucky with the weather. It was a clear morning, not too hot yet, which made the whole activity even better and more comfortable.

And honestly? Yes, I would do it again.

Not because everything went perfectly, but because it didn’t have to.

Kayaking was a fun activity that proved one thing to me—you don’t have to feel fully ready to try something new.

You just have to go for it and I’m glad I did. ❤
