Every time I pack for a trip, I notice the same thing.
My beauty pouch never gets any bigger.
While everything else changes depending on the destination, the weather, or whether I’m travelling for four days or two weeks, my beauty essentials stay almost exactly the same.
Travelling has taught me that I don’t need a bag full of beauty products to feel confident. A few well-chosen essentials are more than enough to keep my skin happy, my hair manageable, and help me feel put together wherever I go.
I’ve also noticed that the moment I leave Malaysia, my skin seems to change completely. It becomes much drier, my lips crack more easily, my scalp feels itchy, and even my hair loses its softness. I’m still not entirely sure why. Maybe it’s the change in climate, lower humidity, or simply spending long hours on planes, trains, and buses.
Whatever the reason, I’ve learned to pack beauty essentials that solve those problems instead of bringing everything I own.
These are the ones that have travelled with me on every trip and never let me down.
✅ A Gentle Facial Cleanser
This is always the first thing that goes into my toiletry bag.
After spending an entire day outdoors, my face usually ends up covered with sunscreen, sweat, dust, and whatever the wind decides to throw at me. Going to bed without properly cleansing my skin is something I simply can’t do.
Before every trip, I transfer my cleanser into a 100ml travel bottle. It saves space, reduces weight, and is much more convenient when travelling with just a backpack.
I always choose a gentle cleanser because travelling can already make my skin feel more sensitive than usual. The last thing I want is a cleanser that strips away moisture and leaves my skin feeling tight or dry.
My go-to is the Clinelle Caviar Gold Firming Cleanser because it removes sunscreen, sweat, dirt, and all the grime from a long day of exploring without making my skin feel stripped afterwards. It’s gentle, cleanses really well, and most importantly, my skin still feels comfortable after every wash.
✅ Moisturiser Is Non-Negotiable
For some reason, every time I leave Malaysia, my skin becomes noticeably drier. I’ve experienced it often enough that I just expect it now whenever I travel.
Because of that, moisturiser is one product I never skip. After cleansing my face, I gently pat my skin dry and apply moisturiser straight away to lock in the moisture. It’s a simple habit, but one that really helps my skin stay comfortable throughout the day.
I’ve been using the Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream for quite some time, and it has become one of my favourite travel moisturisers. It has a rich yet lightweight texture, absorbs well without feeling greasy, and keeps my skin hydrated for hours. Even after a full day of sightseeing, my skin still feels soft instead of dry and tight.
That’s really all my skincare routine looks like when I travel. Cleanse, moisturise, apply sunscreen, and I’m ready to start the day.
✅ Sunscreens That Do More Than Just Protect
I personally prefer tinted and tone-up sunscreens because they save both space and time. I don’t need to pack sunscreen, foundation, and BB cream separately. Instead, I get the benefits of all three in a single product.
- La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Tinted Fluid SPF50+
- Dr.G Brightening Up Sun+ SPF50
The La Roche-Posay version has a much lighter, more liquid texture that feels almost weightless on my skin.
The Dr.G sunscreen is creamier and gives my skin a brighter, more even appearance, which I really like on days when I want to look a little more put together.
Both have worked really well for me, and which one I pack usually depends on the trip. Of course, everyone’s skin is different, so the best sunscreen is always the one that works best for your skin.
✅ Nivea Creme Is My Little Multi-Purpose Hero
This little blue tin has saved my skin more times than I can count.
Whenever my skin starts feeling extra dry after a long day of exploring, especially around my nose, lips, and hairline, I apply a generous layer of Nivea Creme before going to bed. I don’t use it all over my face. I mainly apply it to the areas that need the most moisture, and I almost always wake up with my skin feeling much softer and looking far less dry.
Since the original tin is a little bulky to carry around, I transfer a small amount into two tiny travel containers before every trip. One stays in my toiletry bag, while the other goes into my day bag, so I always have it within easy reach whenever my skin needs a little extra moisture. It’s compact, doesn’t leak, and has been a lifesaver on countless trips.
✅ Vaseline For Dry Lips (And More)
My lips can become painfully dry whenever I travel to colder destinations. That’s when Vaseline becomes an absolute lifesaver.
I apply it throughout the day whenever they start feeling dry, and I always use it before applying lip tint to keep them smooth and prevent them from looking flaky. It simply works better for me than most lip balms whenever I travel.
If I do reach for a lip balm, my favourite is Eucerin Lip Active. It’s a product I really like, but I still find myself relying on Vaseline more often, especially on longer trips or in colder weather.
Just like my Nivea Creme, I transfer a small amount into a clean contact lens case before every trip. It’s lightweight, takes up almost no space, and is much more convenient than carrying the entire tub around. That way, I always have it with me whenever my lips need a quick touch-up. It also comes in handy as a backup moisturiser if I happen to run out of my Nivea Creme while travelling.
✅ Shampoo, Conditioner & Hair Serum
My hair reacts to travelling just like my skin does. It becomes drier, frizzier, and loses its shine after a few days on the road.
That’s why I never rely on hotel shampoo. I always bring my own shampoo and conditioner in travel bottles because I know they suit my hair much better.
The one product that makes the biggest difference, though, is hair serum.
I’ve been using the La Flor Anti Frizz Serum, and I love that it also comes in a travel-sized bottle, making it perfect for backpacking. Just one or two pumps through the mid-lengths and ends of my hair help reduce frizz, add back some softness, and make my hair much easier to manage without feeling greasy.
It’s one of those small products that makes a surprisingly big difference, especially before taking photos.
✅ My Simple Travel Makeup
When I travel, this is pretty much all the makeup I bring:
- Eyebrow pencil – helps frame my face in seconds.
- Concealer – brightens my under-eye area and helps hide those eye bags after early flights or long travel days.
- Eyeliner – makes my eyes look more awake with very little effort.
- Blusher – adds a healthy flush and stops me from looking washed out.
- Lip tint – lasts much longer than lipstick and rarely needs touching up throughout the day.
Getting ready usually takes me less than 10 minutes, and honestly, that’s all I need before heading out to explore.
I’m not trying to look glamorous while travelling. I just want to look fresh, healthy, and like I actually had a full night’s sleep. Filling in my brows, adding a little concealer, blush, eyeliner, and lip tint are enough to give me the confidence to head out the door without overthinking my appearance.
💡 Less Really Is More
Travelling has reminded me that less really is more. When you’re walking more than 20,000 steps a day, catching public transport, and fitting everything into a single backpack, you quickly realise that packing less makes travelling so much easier.
Even in my everyday life, I rarely wear much makeup because I’ve always preferred focusing on healthy skin. Travelling hasn’t changed that. If anything, it’s reminded me that I don’t need a complicated beauty routine to feel good about myself.
A few well-chosen essentials are more than enough to keep my skin comfortable, my hair looking its best, and help me feel fresh enough to head out and enjoy the day.
Of course, there are plenty of mornings when I still look tired after catching an early train, watching the sunrise, or squeezing in one more place before heading back to the hotel. That’s simply part of travelling. A little concealer, blush, eyeliner, and lip tint help me look a little more awake, and honestly, that’s all I’m aiming for.
At the end of the day, I’d much rather spend my time exploring than standing in front of a mirror.
And when I look back on my trips, I remember the places I visited, the people I met, and the experiences I had, not how many beauty products I packed.
Love, Auri 🌻
