If there’s one cuisine I never seem to get tired of, it’s Indonesian food.
Ayam penyet, ayam geprek, ayam gepuk… they’re everywhere these days and it feels like a new Indonesian restaurant opens every other month.
Malaysians have really embraced these dishes, and honestly, I completely understand why.
The food isn’t overly complicated. A plate of white rice, fried chicken or fish, fresh vegetables, fried tempeh and tofu, soy sauce, a bowl of warm soup, and most importantly, a generous serving of sambal.
Simple ingredients, yet somehow incredibly satisfying.
Over the years, I’ve tried quite a few Indonesian restaurants, but there’s one place I keep finding myself returning to.
Located in a quiet village neighbourhood, Ayam Penyet Kak Su, also known as Warong Kak Su, is a family-style Indonesian warung serving a variety of authentic Indonesian favourites. I’ve been coming here for years, yet somehow I’ve never shared it on Wanderhoney until now.
✅ First Impression
I’ll be honest. I’m usually quite picky when it comes to eating at small roadside warungs. Whenever I see one, my mind immediately starts asking questions.
“Where do they wash the dishes?”
“Is everything prepared hygienically?”
“Will the food actually be fresh?”
So it normally takes a lot for me to walk into one.
Ayam Penyet Kak Su was different.
Although it’s a simple roadside warung, it feels more like someone has welcomed you into their home for a meal. The atmosphere is relaxed, peaceful, and very much like dining in a Malaysian kampung.
Don’t expect air-conditioning or stylish interior design. The dining area is completely open with ceiling fans, plastic tables, and a very casual setting. On one visit, I even had a tiny lizard casually crawling along the wall beside my table, which definitely gave me a little jump scare. 😂
The staff, who I believe are Indonesian based on the way they spoke, were always friendly and welcoming whenever I visited.

✅ The Menu & What We Ordered
One thing I really like about Kak Su is that the menu isn’t limited to just Ayam Penyet.
You’ll also find dishes like:
- Keli Penyet
- Bakso
- Mi Ayam
- Gado-gado
- Satay
…along with several other Indonesian favourites.
The drinks are equally simple. Besides the usual hot and cold beverages, they also sell bottled Indonesian tea, which somehow makes the whole warung feel even more authentic.
If you only want plain water, it’s available for self-service, so you can refill your glass whenever you like.
I’ve visited this place many times over the years, and I almost always order either:
- Ayam Penyet
The chicken is fried fresh every time you order, so it arrives at the table piping hot. Once you take your first bite, you’ll notice how juicy and tender the meat is inside, while the outside has a beautifully crisp coating. It’s well-marinated, so every bite is flavourful even before you add the sambal.
I also like that the chicken isn’t overly greasy, making it easy to enjoy right to the very last piece.
- Keli Penyet
Their keli penyet is just as good. The fish is well-marinated and fried until the skin becomes perfectly crispy, while the meat inside stays moist and flaky. It isn’t dry at all, which is something I always look for when ordering fried catfish.
Both sets come with steamed rice, fried tempeh, fresh cucumber, cabbage, a generous serving of sambal, and a small bowl of clear soup. I also like that every component has its place on the plate. The fresh vegetables help balance the richness of the fried chicken or fish, while the warm soup is comforting to sip between bites.
But for me…
The real star, though, is the sambal. It has that unmistakable Indonesian flavour I always hope for whenever I order ayam penyet. The heat level is just right, spicy enough to give it a nice kick but not so fiery that it overpowers everything else. There’s also a lovely balance of savoury and slightly sweet flavours that keeps me going back for more. Once the chicken is coated in that sambal, every bite becomes even more satisfying.
If I had one small wish, it would be for a little extra sambal because it really is that good.

✅ Is Ayam Penyet Kak Su Worth the Price?
Absolutely.
Considering the portion sizes and the quality of the food, I think the prices are very reasonable.
Because it’s a small neighbourhood warung rather than a commercial restaurant, you can enjoy authentic Indonesian food without spending much.
Whenever my partner and I eat here, our total bill usually comes to around RM20 to RM25, which I think is excellent value for money.
I did come across a few older online reviews mentioning inconsistent experiences, but personally, I’ve never encountered any major issues during my visits. The food has been consistently satisfying, and that’s exactly why I keep returning.
✅ Location & Opening Hours
One thing to keep in mind is that the restaurant is located in a quiet village neighbourhood rather than a commercial area.
There isn’t a dedicated parking lot, so most customers simply park along the roadside. Just be considerate and make sure your car isn’t blocking traffic or the entrances to nearby homes.

✅ Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a fancy Indonesian restaurant with stylish décor and air-conditioning, this probably isn’t the place for you.
But if you’re after authentic Indonesian flavours, delicious sambal, generous portions, and affordable prices, I genuinely think Ayam Penyet Kak Su deserves a visit.
I’ll admit, I was quite hesitant the first time I came here because I’m usually very picky about hygiene, especially when it comes to small roadside warungs. But after dining here many times over the years, I’ve never had any issues with the food or cleanliness, and that’s one of the reasons I keep coming back.
For me, good food is worth returning to, and Ayam Penyet Kak Su has earned its place as one of my favourite spots whenever I’m craving authentic Indonesian food. The warm hospitality, home-style cooking, and budget-friendly prices make it one of those hidden gems that’s well worth discovering.
If you’re ever in the area, give it a try. Hopefully, you’ll leave just as satisfied as I do every time I visit.
