After stuffing ourselves with American-style barbecue at Cowboys Barbecue & Grill, I was convinced I wouldn’t be eating anything else for the rest of the day.
Well… that thought lasted approximately twenty minutes. 😂
If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I almost always have room for dessert.
So before heading home, we decided to make one last stop.
Having visited Kuching several times over the years, Sarawak will always hold a special place in my heart, especially when it comes to its food. From Sarawak Laksa and Mee Kolok to the sweet aroma of freshly made apong, there’s something incredibly comforting about Sarawak’s flavours that always keeps me coming back for more.
When I came across a place that specialises in one of Sarawak’s beloved treats, I knew I had to give it a try.
✅ About Oh Apong
Owned by the people behind Suka Dessert, Oh Apong is a halal dessert café in Kota Damansara that’s best known for its signature gula apong ice cream inspired by the flavours of Sarawak.
For those unfamiliar with it, gula apong is a type of palm sugar produced from the sap of the nipah palm, which commonly grows around Sarawak’s coastal and mangrove areas. Compared with ordinary sugar, it has a deeper, slightly smoky caramel flavour that gives desserts a distinctive sweetness without tasting overly sugary.
Oh Apong takes that familiar Sarawakian flavour and turns it into creamy soft-serve ice cream, often finished with gula apong drizzle and a selection of crunchy toppings or fresh fruit. Alongside its signature ice cream, the café also offers coffee, tea, cakes, cookies, light snacks, and other sweet treats.
What caught my attention most was the chance to enjoy a flavour that immediately reminded me of Sarawak without travelling all the way back to Kuching.
Having tasted gula apong treats there before, I arrived with fairly high expectations.
The only question was…
Would Oh Apong bring back the flavour I remembered?
✅ What I Ordered at Oh Apong
Despite still feeling rather full after lunch, my dessert stomach somehow managed to make room for two things, the 3-Layer Apong Tea and Oh Apong’s signature Apong Ice Cream.
I had fairly high expectations for both, especially since Sarawak-inspired desserts rarely disappoint me.
Let’s start with the tea.
The 3-Layer Apong Tea was pleasant, but if I’m being honest, it didn’t quite live up to what I had in mind. Having enjoyed similar drinks in Sarawak before, I was expecting something richer, creamier, and much more “kaw”. The flavours here were noticeably lighter and less sweet, which I think would be perfect for those who prefer their drinks more subtle and balanced.
Unfortunately, I belong to the “more creamy, more happiness” club when it comes to my tea, so this one didn’t quite hit the spot for me.
The Apong Ice Cream, on the other hand, was easily my favourite of the two.
Creamy, smooth, and perfectly balanced in sweetness, it carried beautiful caramel-like notes that immediately reminded me of salted caramel. It wasn’t overly rich or cloyingly sweet, making it surprisingly easy to finish despite how full I already was.
Safe to say, dessert managed to redeem itself rather beautifully that afternoon.
✅ Dining Experience at Oh Apong
One thing I really enjoyed about Oh Apong was its atmosphere.
The café has a modern and cozy aesthetic that’s perfect for slowing down after a busy day. Despite its contemporary design, it still manages to feel warm and welcoming rather than overly minimalist or intimidating. It’s the kind of place where you can comfortably spend an hour catching up with friends over dessert or simply enjoy a quiet afternoon with a good cup of coffee and something sweet.
There were also plenty of tempting pastries and desserts beautifully displayed throughout the café. If I hadn’t just come from lunch, I’m fairly certain I would’ve left with far more than just an ice cream and a cup of tea. 😂
Instead, I spent my time slowly enjoying my dessert and soaking in the relaxed atmosphere around me.
Looking back, I think that’s what I enjoyed most about visiting Oh Apong. It wasn’t simply about satisfying my sweet tooth. It was about ending a lovely foodie adventure on a sweet and unhurried note.
✅ Is Oh Apong Worth The Price?
Personally, I’d say yes.
While the 3-Layer Apong Tea didn’t quite live up to my expectations, I genuinely enjoyed the Apong Ice Cream and found it worth ordering. Creamy, smooth, and perfectly balanced in sweetness, it was easily my favourite part of the visit.
I also appreciate that Oh Apong offers something a little different from your usual dessert cafés around Klang Valley. Rather than serving the same cakes and pastries you’ll find elsewhere, the café celebrates the unique flavours of Sarawak through its signature gula apong creations, which makes the experience feel that little bit more special.
Of course, I don’t think every item on the menu will suit everyone’s palate. If you’re someone who enjoys richer and creamier drinks like I do, you may find the 3-Layer Apong Tea slightly lighter than expected. But for those who prefer their drinks less sweet and more subtle in flavour, it might be exactly what you’re looking for.
For me, the ice cream alone was worth making the stop for.

Its modern and cozy atmosphere also makes it perfect for slowing down after a busy day or, in my case, ending a foodie adventure on a sweet note.

✅ Would I Recommend Oh Apong?
I would.
What I appreciate most about Oh Apong isn’t just its desserts, it’s the way it celebrates the flavours of Sarawak in such a charming and approachable way.
While not everything I ordered became an instant favourite, I genuinely enjoyed my time here. It’s the kind of café I can see myself returning to whenever I’m in the mood for something sweet and unhurried. The cafés I remember most aren’t necessarily the ones that serve the very best desserts. They’re usually the ones that make me want to stay a little longer and come back again someday.
If you’ve been curious about gula apong or simply love discovering cafés that celebrate local flavours in creative ways, I think Oh Apong is definitely worth adding to your list.
And who knows? There are still plenty of things on the menu waiting for me to try, which sounds like a pretty good excuse for another visit someday.
