If you struggle with dry skin, you’re not alone. Finding the right skincare routine can be a process of trial and error. Over time, I’ve discovered effective ways to manage my dry skin, and today, I’m sharing my top tips to help those facing the same challenge.
Dry skin, if not properly cared for, can lead to irritation, itchiness, and even impact self-confidence. However, it’s important to remember that skincare is not a one-size-fits-all approach—what works for me might not work for everyone. That being said, these methods have been incredibly effective in keeping my skin healthy and hydrated.
1. Choose the Right Body Wash
Using the wrong body wash can strip your skin of its natural moisture, making dryness worse. I highly recommend using a goat’s milk body wash, as it’s gentle and nourishing. I’ve tried various antibacterial soaps like Dettol, Lifebuoy, and Antabax, but they tend to dry out my skin even more. Even baby soaps don’t always work for me. Sticking to a goat’s milk-based body wash has made a noticeable difference.
2. Apply Body Lotion Right After Showering
The best time to apply body lotion is immediately after a shower, while your skin is still slightly damp. Pat your skin dry with a towel, then apply lotion from your feet up to your neck. My go-to product is Nivea Intensive Moisture Milk Body Lotion, which I highly recommend for deep hydration.
3. Exfoliate Weekly
Regular exfoliation removes dead skin cells, allowing your skincare products to absorb better. I use a homemade body scrub made from oats and milk—a gentle yet effective way to exfoliate. Aim to exfoliate once a week to maintain soft, smooth skin.
4. Treat Cracked Heels with Warm Water and Petroleum Jelly
If you suffer from cracked heels, try soaking your feet in warm water for 15–20 minutes. Afterwards, gently scrub the soles of your feet to remove dead skin. Finish by applying Vaseline Petroleum Jelly, then wear socks to lock in moisture. Even on days when you don’t soak your feet, applying Vaseline before bed helps keep heels soft and smooth.
5. Use Lip Balm for Chapped Lips
Severely dry lips can be frustrating, especially when wearing lipstick. After trying numerous lip balms, the one that worked best for me is Eucerin Lip Active. It’s a game-changer! If you have chapped lips, avoid using matte lipsticks and any products with a matte finish, as they can worsen dryness.
6. Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water is essential for healthy skin. You’ll hear this advice everywhere because it truly makes a difference. Make sure you’re getting enough water daily, and don’t forget to drink a glass as soon as you wake up in the morning.
7. Keep Your Cuticles Hydrated
Dry, cracked cuticles can be painful and unsightly. To prevent this, I use The Bodyshop Almond Nail And Cuticle Oil, applying it after showers and before bed. Consistency is key—regular use will keep your nails and cuticles soft and healthy.
8. Always Have Petroleum Jelly on Hand
Vaseline is a must-have for dry skin. Some areas need extra care, like elbows and knees, even after applying lotion. Using Vaseline Petroleum Jelly consistently helps heal dry patches and keeps skin hydrated.
9. Choose the Right Face Moisturizer
Your facial skin needs specialised care, and it’s crucial to use the right moisturiser for your skin type. Here are some of my top recommendations for dry skin:
- La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5
- Bioderma Hydrabio Gel-Creme
- Cerave AM Facial Moisturizing lotion
- Cerave PM Facial Moisturizing lotion
