The Basic Disciplines That I Think Everybody Should Practice.

Have you ever noticed how basic discipline appears to be a dying art these days? With the constant distractions of technology and the lack of boundaries in our daily lives, maintaining discipline is becoming increasingly difficult for some people. Not only adults but also youngsters these days are showing signs of a lack of discipline. This is especially concerning because discipline is an important aspect of life.

We appear to have forgotten its importance as a society. Parents and carers are frequently too preoccupied with their own lives to set boundaries or model healthy habits for their children. Also, many parents I’ve seen these days don’t even correct their children when they misbehave, which only perpetuates the problem. So, in today’s blog post, I’d like to share with you some basic discipline practices that I believe everyone should know and practice. These practices have helped me personally, and I believe they can benefit anyone who is looking to improve themselves.

Avoid using or placing your phone on the table during dinner, drinks, or both.

When you’re out for a meal or drink, it’s best to keep your phone away from the table. Using phones during meal times can be disrespectful and distracting to those around you. It can also disrupt meaningful conversations. By putting your phone aside, you can engage in deeper and more enriching conversations, build stronger relationships with those around you, and savor the moment. You’ll also be able to enjoy your food and drinks without the constant stimulation of technology, allowing for a more relaxing dining experience.

Know how to carry yourself in a different environment.

Knowing how to carry yourself in a different environment is an important basic discipline that everyone should practice, especially in exclusive places, professional settings, and even social events. Your attitude, behavior, and communication style can significantly affect how others perceive you and impact how well you do in those environments. By being aware of appropriate conduct and adjusting your behavior accordingly, you can make a positive impression and build strong relationships with others.

If someone lends you money to pay for something, make every effort to repay them as soon as possible.

It shows appreciation, responsibility, and respect. By repaying them quickly, you demonstrate that you value their help, respect their time and resources, and are trustworthy. Not paying back promptly can create uncomfortable situations and potentially damage relationships. Ultimately, practicing this basic discipline can help you maintain good relationships and avoid unnecessary conflicts.

If you are not invited, don’t ask to go.

It shows respect for others’ boundaries and decisions. When we ask to go to an event or gathering that we haven’t been invited to, it can be seen as pushy or rude and can make others feel uncomfortable or pressured to say yes. Respecting others’ decisions and boundaries is crucial for maintaining healthy relationships and avoiding misunderstandings or conflicts. By following this basic discipline, we show that we value the opinions and decisions of others, and are willing to respect their wishes, even if it means missing out on an event or gathering.

Always have cash on you.

It can be useful in any situation, especially when card payments are not accepted or when the internet connection is poor. Cash can also help with budgeting, as it limits spending and can be useful during emergencies. Carrying cash also reduces the risk of identity theft or fraud and can serve as a backup option in case of lost or stolen cards.

Put down your phone when someone is talking to you.

It shows respect and attention to the person you are communicating with. Being distracted by your phone while someone is talking can make them feel unimportant and disrespected. By being present and engaged in the conversation, you demonstrate that you value the other person’s time and effort, which can help build trust and rapport in your relationships. This can improve the quality of your conversations and help you deepen your connection with others.

Be mindful of your gaze. Don’t look at someone from head to toe.

It shows respect and consideration for the other person’s feelings and privacy. Looking at someone from head to toe can be interpreted as objectifying or judging them based on their appearance, which can make them feel uncomfortable, disrespected, or even violated. Respect the other person’s dignity and worth as a person, no matter how they look or what their social status is. This can help make your interactions more positive and respectful, as well as build trust and understanding between you and other people.

Say “Thank You” to every service worker.

It acknowledges their efforts and shows gratitude for their service. Service workers, like those who clean, cook, deliver, or fix things, often do jobs that are important but not appreciated. By taking a moment to say “Thank you,” you can make their day a little brighter and show that you appreciate their hard work. It can help people from different backgrounds or cultures connect with each other and break down social barriers. Ultimately, practicing this basic discipline can help promote kindness, generosity, and appreciation in our daily interactions, and make the world a better place for everyone.

Practicing good hygiene is a crucial aspect of our daily lives.

Good hygiene habits, like taking regular showers and using deodorant, can help prevent body odor and make us feel more comfortable and confident in social situations. In the same way, brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash can help keep your breath fresh and your mouth healthy. Neglecting these aspects of hygiene can not only make us feel self-conscious but also create unpleasant experiences for those around us. By making good hygiene a basic discipline, we can avoid feeling uncomfortable for no reason and show respect for ourselves and others.

When someone treats you, never order the most expensive option.

When someone treats you to a meal or activity, it’s important to be considerate and mindful of their generosity. Ordering the most expensive item on the menu can convey a sense of entitlement and ingratitude, which can be off-putting and disrespectful. Instead, it’s better to choose a reasonably priced option or ask for the host’s recommendation. This shows appreciation for the gesture and allows everyone to enjoy the experience without any unnecessary discomfort or awkwardness. By following this basic discipline, we can demonstrate respect and gratitude toward others and maintain positive relationships.

Never eat the last piece of something you didn’t buy.

When it comes to communal food items, such as a shared pizza or box of donuts, it’s important to practice consideration and respect for others. Eating the last piece of something you didn’t buy can be seen as rude and inconsiderate towards others who may have been looking forward to having it. By leaving the last piece for someone else or asking if anyone wants it before taking it, we show respect for others and create a more positive and inclusive environment. This basic discipline may seem small, but it can make a big difference in how we interact with others and how we are perceived by those around us.

Never take more than you’re supposed to.

Taking more than you are supposed to, whether it’s food, supplies, or anything else, can be seen as selfish and disrespectful towards others who may need or want it as well. It’s important to be mindful of others and practice self-control to ensure that everyone has access to what they need and to prevent any unnecessary waste. By following this basic discipline, we show consideration for others and promote a more fair and sustainable society.

Never shake hands while sitting down.

Shaking hands is a common gesture of greeting or farewell, and it’s important to do it respectfully. When meeting someone, it’s considered proper etiquette to stand up and shake their hand. Sitting down can be seen as a sign of disrespect or laziness, and it may leave a negative impression on the other person. By standing up to shake someone’s hand, we show that we value their presence and are willing to give them our full attention. It’s a small but important gesture that can make a big difference in how we are perceived by others.

Don’t take credit for work you didn’t do.

It is not only unethical but can also be harmful to your reputation and professional relationships if you take credit for someone else’s work. Being honest about one’s role in a project and giving credit where it deserves are both very important. If you try to take credit for someone else’s work, they may become resentful and distrustful, which could have a negative impact on your career. On the other hand, giving credit where it deserves can build strong relationships with colleagues and demonstrate integrity and professionalism. So, always be honest about your contributions, and don’t take credit for work you didn’t do.

Be well-dressed and presentable at all times.

Having a good appearance can have a positive impact on how others perceive you and can increase your confidence in any social situation. Dressing well and making yourself presentable shows that you respect the people you are interacting with and take the situation seriously. It also demonstrates that you have self-respect and take pride in your appearance. However, it is important to note that dressing well and being presentable does not necessarily mean conforming to societal standards or spending a lot of money on clothing. It is more about taking care of your personal appearance and making an effort to look your best in any given situation. Additionally, being presentable can boost your own confidence and help you feel more prepared for whatever situation you are facing.

Respect other people’s race, religion, culture, or any other differences.
This basic discipline is important because it promotes a culture of inclusivity and respect for diversity. By respecting other people’s race, religion, culture, or any other differences, you show that you are open-minded and willing to learn without judging. This can help create a positive and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected. It can also foster better relationships and help build bridges between different communities. Additionally, respecting diversity is a fundamental human right and is necessary for a peaceful and harmonious society.

Do not brag about what you have.

It’s important not to brag if you want to stay humble and make real connections with other people. Bragging often comes across as arrogant and may turn people off. Instead, focus on sharing your accomplishments and successes in a humble and gracious manner. This will make others more likely to celebrate your achievements with you and see you in a positive light. Remember, actions speak louder than words, and your character and achievements will speak for themselves.

Don’t take advantage of other people’s money.

It’s important to be mindful of other people’s money, especially if they are helping you. Taking advantage of someone else’s money can strain relationships and lead to trust issues. It’s important to be transparent and communicate about financial matters and avoid making unreasonable requests or taking advantage of someone’s generosity. Remember to be responsible and respectful when it comes to money matters, and always consider how your actions may affect others.
